A trifecta for John Size in the HK Group 2 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup

A wonderful result in the HK Group 2 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup for Australian trainer John Size who provided the trifecta in the event.  The marvellous galloper Electronic Unicorn(USA) (Housebuster-Lilac Garden) scored by ½ length from Super Kid(NZ) (Gaius-Pompeii Pride) with Palette Natural(NZ) (Volksraad-Proteaceae) 3¼ lengths back in third position.

 

Hong Kong Racing Update

John Size has extended his lead to 14 wins in the Trainer’s Ranking.  Size has recorded 67 winners, 52 seconds, 48 thirds, 52 fourths and 29 fifths from 500 runners. David Hayes is in second position having recorded 53 winners, 46 seconds, 39 thirds, 41 fourths and 49 fifths from 498 runners.  John Moore is in fourth position with 47 winners, 32 seconds, 31 thirds, 27 fourths and 34 fifths from 407 runners. 

 

Douglas Whyte has extended his lead yet again in the Jockey’s Ranking and now has a 31 win advantage.  Whyte has recorded 94 winners, 79 seconds, 69 thirds, 49 fourths and 53 fifths from 546 rides.  Shane Dye is in second place with 63 winners, 48 seconds, 42 thirds, 50 fourths and 38 fifths from 488 rides. Craig Williams is in eighth place with 27 winners, 33 seconds, 36 thirds, 43 fourths and 35 fifths from 416 rides.

No Southern Hemisphere Season for Cape Cross

It has been announced that the record breaking Champion miler Cape Cross will not shuttle to Darley Australia for the 2004 season.  Cape Cross (Green Desert-Park Appeal) has served a large book of mares in Europe this year and it has been decided to rest him from southern hemisphere duties this year.  It is expected that Cape Cross will resume shuttling in 2005.

 

Orpen to Shuttle to Argentina

Coolmore has announced that Orpen will shuttle to Argentina instead of Australia for the 2004 southern hemisphere season.  Orpen (Lure-Bonita Francita) who was the Champion 2YO in Ireland of his year, entered stud in Ireland and Australia in 2000.  His daughter Torrestrella is the recent winner of the Group 1 French 1000 Guineas.

David Hayes is in second position having recorded 52 winners, 45 seconds, 38 thirds, 40 fourths and 47 fifths from 481 runners.  John Moore is in fourth position with 47 winners, 31 seconds, 31 thirds, 26 fourths and 33 fifths from 392 runners. 

 

Douglas Whyte has extended his lead again in the Jockey’s Ranking and now has a 27 win advantage.  Whyte has recorded 88 winners, 78 seconds, 64 thirds, 49 fourths and 52 fifths from 526 rides.  Shane Dye is in second place with 61 winners, 44 seconds, 40 thirds, 49 fourths and 38 fifths from 472 rides. Craig Williams is in eighth place with 26 winners, 32 seconds, 34 thirds, 40 fourths and 34 fifths from 402 rides.

Vale – Jade Robbery

Jade Robbery (USA) (Mr Prospector-Number) the winner of the Group 1 Grand Criterium and former shuttle stallion to Widden Stud at Denman has died at Shadai Farm in Japan.  Jade Robbery was the sire of 13 stakeswinners including 1999 Japanese Champion 2YO Filly Yamakatsu Suzuran.  In his eleven crops to race, he has recorded 315 winners from 640 starters.  Jade Diva the winner of the listed MVRC Silver Jubilee Stakes is his best performed progeny to date in Australia.

 

Smarty Jones takes Preakness Stakes

Smarty Jones (USA) (Elusive Quality-I’ll Get Along) the winner of the Group 1 Kentucky Derby, completely dominated the second leg of the Triple Crown Series in America when winning the Group 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico by 11 lengths.  Smarty Jones scored effortlessly from Rock Hard Ten (USA) (Kris S-Tersa) with Eddington (USA) (Unbridled-Fashion Star) in third place.

David Hayes has moved to second position having recorded 52 winners, 44 seconds, 37 thirds, 40 fourths and 46 fifths from 469 runners.  John Moore is in fourth position with 46 winners, 31 seconds, 31 thirds, 26 fourths and 32 fifths from 381 runners. 

 

Douglas Whyte has extended his lead in the Jockey’s Ranking to 25 wins.  Whyte has recorded 83 winners, 77 seconds, 63 thirds, 49 fourths and 51 fifths from 509 rides.  Shane Dye is in second place with 58 winners, 40 seconds, 39 thirds, 49 fourths and 36 fifths from 455 rides. Craig Williams is in eighth place with 26 winners, 30 seconds, 33 thirds, 36 fourths and 34 fifths from 390 rides.

New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling and Broodmare Sale

Curraghmore Stud sold the top lot at the inaugural Select Weanling Sale staged by New Zealand Bloodstock at Karaka.  Bloomsbury Stud, Matamata, paid NZ$145,000 for Lot 95 a Stravinsky-Smile filly which is a half-sister to the Listed race winner, Mr Smugg (NZ) (Spectacular Love).  The filly hails from the same family as high-class Australian-trained galloper A Little Kiss (NZ) (Sackford) who won the AJC Flight Stakes and Queensland Oaks, both Gr. 1 events.  The average price at the Select Weanling Sale was an impressive $16,376 and the aggregate was $2,514,550 from 154 lots sold.  The clearance rate of 77% showed that by and large vendors were meeting the market with their offerings.

The aggregate for the Broodmare Sale was $2,341,650 for 234 lots sold, compared with $2,106,150 for 5 more lots sold last year. The average price rose to $10,007, from $8,812 last year, and the clearance rate climbed to 78.5% from 75% last year.  The top lot was Lot 764 Dane Gu Li (Danehill x Futile (Alzao)) an unraced mare in foal to Faltaat, and purchased by Michael Malone’s Kitchwin Hills Stud of New South Wales, from Brent & Cherry Taylor’s Trelawney Stud for $100,000.

The overall results for the National Weanling & Broodmare Sale saw the sale gross $5,694,300 for 46 fewer lots sold this year – nearly $1m and 17% up on last year’s combined aggregate for the Weanling & Broodmare Sale and the Autumn Yearling & Two Year Old Sale, of $4,875,150.  This year’s clearance rate rose from 77% to 79.5% and the overall average price rose 26 % from $7,702 to $9,700. The median doubled from $2,600 last year to $4,800.

Hong Kong Jockey Club renews Aussie licences

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has agreed to renew the trainer’s licences for Australians John Size, David Hayes and John Moore for the 2004/2005 racing season.

David Hayes is in third position having recorded 50 winners, 42 seconds, 37 thirds, 40 fourths and 45 fifths from 458 runners.  John Moore is in fourth position with 45 winners, 31 seconds, 30 thirds, 26 fourths and 32 fifths from 370 runners. 

 

Douglas Whyte has extended his lead in the Jockey’s Ranking to 21 wins.  Whyte has recorded 78 winners, 76 seconds, 57 thirds, 48 fourths and 49 fifths from 492 rides.  Shane Dye has moved to second place with 57 winners, 39 seconds, 39 thirds, 48 fourths and 35 fifths from 443 rides. Craig Williams is in eighth place with 24 winners, 29 seconds, 33 thirds, 34 fourths and 31 fifths from 373 rides.

Smarty Jones takes out the 2004 Kentucky Derby

Smarty Jones has taken out the Run for the Roses this year and in so doing has become only the fifth horse to retain his unbeaten record in the Kentucky Derby.  The other eminent members of this group are Regret (1915), Morvich (1922), Majestic Prince (1969) and Seattle Slew (1977).  Smarty Jones(USA) (Elusive Quality-I’ll Get Along) finished too strongly to score by 2¾ lengths from Lion Heart(USA) (Tale of the Cat-Satin Sunrise) with Imperialism(USA) (Langfuhr-Bodhavista) a further 3¼ lengths back in third place.
