The Overseas Challenge for the Hong Kong International Races

Twelve racing countries with 37 horses are currently entered for the four Hong Kong International Races on Sunday 14 December 2003 at Sha Tin.  The four international races are:-

·                     The Group 1 Hong Kong Cup (2000 metres) - US$2.3 million

·                     The Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600 metres) - US$1.8 million

·                     The Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400 metres) - US$1.8 million

·                     The Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1000 metres) - US$1.28 million

The following Australian bred horses have been nominated for the meeting:  Fields of Omagh (HK Vase); Silent Witness (HK Sprint) bred by TBNSW member Mr I K Smith of Edinburgh Park Stud; Grand Delight (HK Sprint); All Thrills Too (HK Sprint) bred in NSW; Bomber Bill (HK Sprint) bred in NSW; Into the Night (HK Sprint) bred by TBNSW member Mr G Harvey; Dantana (HK Sprint); Ninetyfive Emperor (HK Mile); Meridan Star (HK Mile); Dr More (HK Cup) bred in NSW and Elegant Fashion (HK Cup) bred by TBNSW member Emirates Park Pty Ltd.

 

Hong Kong Racing Update

John Size has moved into the lead in the Trainer’s Ranking with a 2 win advantage over John Moore.  Size has recorded 24 winners, 15 seconds, 14 thirds, 19 fourths and 9 fifths from 154 runners.  Moore, in second place, has recorded 22 winners, 9 seconds, 13 thirds, 6 fourths and 11 fifths from 131 runners. David Hayes is in fourth position with 15 winners, 20 seconds, 11 thirds, 14 fourths and 16 fifths from 162 runners.

 

Douglas Whyte continues to lead in the Jockey’s Ranking with a 21 win lead from Shane Dye.  Whyte has 41 winners, 35 seconds, 25 thirds, 20 fourths and 20 fifths from 204 rides.  Shane Dye has moved to second place with 20 winners, 19 seconds, 17 thirds, 20 fourths and 16 fifths from 169 rides.  Dwayne Dunn is in sixth position with 13 winners, 12 seconds, 7 thirds, 17 fourths and 16 fifths from 153 rides.  Craig Williams is in tenth place with 8 winners, 8 seconds, 16 thirds, 13 fourths and 15 fifths from 138 rides.

Lake Coniston to stand in Italy for Northern Hemisphere season

Lake Coniston the Group 1 July Cup winner has been leased to Italy for the 2004 northern hemisphere season.  Lake Consiton will stand at Tenuta della Calandrina, just north of Rome.  Lake Coniston (IRE)(Bluebird(USA)-Persian Polly(IRE)) is currently serving mares at Wyndholm Park Stud, Ballarat in Victoria for $7,000 including GST.  Lake Coniston is the sire of Group 1 winners Continent and Kapistan.

 

Keeneland 2004 January Horses of All Ages Sale

Keeneland have announced that they have catalogued 1,917 for the 2004 January Horses of All Ages Sale which runs from 12 January to 16 January 2004.

 

The catalogue comprises some 827 broodmares, 191 broodmare prospects, 634 yearlings, 152 racing/broodmare prospects, 6 racing/stallion prospects, 81 racing prospects, 21 stallion prospects, 3 stallions and 2 stallion shares.

 

At the 2003 sale, 1,185 horses sold for an aggregate of US$31,186,000 at an average of US$26,317.

Hong Kong Racing Update

John Moore’s lead in the Trainer’s Ranking has narrowed to just 1 win.  Moore has recorded 21 winners, 8 seconds, 13 thirds, 4 fourths and 10 fifths from 119 runners.  John Size is in second position with 20 winners, 15 seconds, 13 thirds, 18 fourths and 9 fifths from 139 runners.  David Hayes is in third position with 14 winners, 20 seconds, 10 thirds, 14 fourths and 12 fifths from 149 runners.

 

Douglas Whyte has again increased his lead in the Jockey’s Ranking and now has a 22 win lead from A Marcus.  Whyte has 40 winners, 34 seconds, 24 thirds, 18 fourths and 20 fifths from 194 rides.  Shane Dye is in third place with 16 winners, 19 seconds, 15 thirds, 19 fourths and 16 fifths from 155 rides.  Dwayne Dunn has moved to sixth position with 13 winners, 12 seconds, 7 thirds, 16 fourths and 12 fifths from 137 rides.  Craig Williams is in tenth place with 7 winners, 5 seconds, 13 thirds, 9 fourths and 14 fifths from 122 rides.

New Zealand Ready to Run Sale

New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale has recorded an increase in aggregate, average, top price and clearance rates.  The sale aggregate was NZ$6.4 million for 183 lots sold with a clearance rate of 75%.  The select session sale average was up 4% to NZ$52,459 whilst the top price of NZ$300,00 was a NZ$60,000 increase on last year’s top price.  Lot 11, a Flying Spur x Joy colt from the Ebony Lodge draft, a half brother to highly talented Group 2 winner Thorn Park, was the sale topper at NZ$300,000.   Overseas buyers were busy with sixteen of the top twenty lots heading to Australia and Hong Kong. The sale also saw a number of buyers from Singapore, Korea, Malaysia and Macau.

Dubai World Cup

Some 538 horses have been nominated for the Dubai World Cup Day from 19 countries. The Dubai World Cup meeting, with US$15,250,000 prizemoney, is the world’s single richest day of racing.   Among the list of international 1st nominations for the Dubai World Cup meeting are the following Australasian horses: Abdullah; Allgunadoit; Ambulance; Ancient Song; Blur; Bomber Bill; Clangalang; Defier; Elvstroem; Exceed And Excel; Fields Of Omagh; Frightening; Gentle Genius; Grey Song; Halibery; Makybe Diva; Natural Blitz; Nips; Our Egyptian Raine; Pentastic; Platinum Scissors; Shower Of Roses; Sunday Joy; Timbourina; Titanic Jack; Vocabulary; Zagalia; Zazzman.

 

Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale

The 2003 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale has concluded with a world record for a broodmare, a North American record for a colt foal and the fourth highest gross in the Sale’s history.  Over 11 days, 2,614 horses were sold for US$236,070,900 up 26.1% on last year.  Cash Run, the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner, created a world record for a broodmare when she was knocked down to John Magnier for US$7.1 million. The record price for a foal was for the Storm Cat colt out of Spain which sold for US$2.4 million.

The Cartier Racing Awards

The Cartier Racing Awards were held at the Four Seasons Hotel in London this week with Dalakhani named the Horse of the Year and Cartier 3YO colt.  Dalakhani (Darshaan-Daltawa) follows in the footsteps of Rock of Gibraltar who won both titles last year.  The award winners  for all categories were:

Langfuhr relocated to Lane’s End, Kentucky

Former Champion Canadian Sprinter, Langfuhr (CAN) will be relocated to Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky for the 2004 northern hemisphere breeding season.  Langfuhr(CAN) (Danzig-Sweet Briar Too) who shuttles to Vinery Stud in the Hunter Valley for the southern hemisphere season, is the sire of 24 stakes winners from just three crops of racing age.  His northern hemisphere service fee for 2004 will be US$20,000.

Keeneland Records Fall on First Day

The opening day of the Keeneland November Breeding Sale saw two records fall.  A new world record price for a broodmare was created when John Magnier paid US$7.1 million for Cash Run, the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner.  The record price for a foal was also beaten with the sale of a Storm Cat colt out of Spain realising US$2.4 million.  In all, eleven horses recorded seven figures and prices soared across the board.  Day one statistics are as follows:
