Hong Kong Racing Update

John Moore has extended his lead to 8 wins in the Trainer’s Ranking.  Moore has recorded 18 winners, 6 seconds, 9 thirds, 2 fourths and 6 fifths from 78 runners.  David Hayes is in second position with 10 winners, 17 seconds, 5 thirds, 8 fourths and 6 fifths from 90 runners. John Size is in fifth position with 8 winners, 5 seconds, 7 thirds, 12 fourths and 7 fifths from 73 runners.

 

Douglas Whyte is increasing his lead in the Jockey’s Ranking and now has a 14 win lead from A Marcus.  Whyte has 28 winners, 14 seconds, 15 thirds, 14 fourths and 14 fifths from 124 rides.  Shane Dye is in fifth place with 9 winners, 10 seconds, 10 thirds, 13 fourths and 14 fifths from 98 rides.  Dwayne Dunn is in seventh position with 6 winners, 8 seconds, 6 thirds, 11 fourths and 10 fifths from 85 rides.  Craig Williams is in tenth place with 5 winners, 3 seconds, 7 thirds, 4 fourths and 6 fifths from 68 rides.

Vale - Bill Shoemaker

Bill Shoemaker, the legendary American jockey has died in his home in San Marino in California.  Shoemaker was paralysed from the neck down from a car accident shortly after he retired from racing in 1991.  Shoemaker was 72 years of age.  Bill Shoemaker had a career spanning some 41 years and rode 8,833 winners, a total which still ranks second on the all-time list behind Laffit Pincay Jnr’s 9,530.  Shoemaker who was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1958 will best be remembered as the rider of Ferdinand, John Henry, Spectacular Bid, Swaps, Sword Dancer and Northern Dancer.

 

Godolphin retire Grandera and Moon Ballad

Grandera and Moon Ballad both Group 1 winners for Godolphin have been retired and will stand under the Darley banner at the Yoshun Company’s stud in Japan.  Moon Ballad (Singspiel-Velvet Moon) was the winner of this year’s Group 1 Dubai World Cup whilst Grandera (Grand Lodge-Bordighera) won three times at Group 1 level in 2002 in the Singapore Airlines Cup, the Prince of Wales’ Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes.

Douglas Whyte has increased his lead to 9 wins from A Marcus in the Jockey’s Ranking.  Whyte has 21 winners, 13 seconds, 13 thirds, 11 fourths and 13 fifths from 107 rides.  Shane Dye is in fifth place with 8 winners, 9 seconds, 8 thirds, 11 fourths and 12 fifths from 86 rides.  Dwayne Dunn is in eighth position with 5 winners, 6 seconds, 6 thirds, 8 fourths and 10 fifths from 76 rides.  Craig Williams is in tenth place with 4 winners, 2 seconds, 7 thirds, 4 fourths and 4 fifths from 53 rides.

While on Hong Kong, last year's Champion Griffin and Most Improved Horse in Hong Kong, Silent Witness bred by TBNSW member Mr I K Smith of Edinburgh Park Stud, tackled proven international sprinters and beat them in the inaugural Group 3 Sha Tin Sprint Trophy last weekend.  Silent Witness (El Moxie(USA)-Jade Tiara) takes his record to six from six with career prizemoney of HK$5,226,900.  His next mission will be the Group 2 International Sprint Trial on November 22 then onto the Hong Kong Sprint in December.

 

Helissio to stand 2004 season at The National Stud

The outstanding racehorse Helissio who shuttles to Widden Stud in New South Wales, will stand the northern hemisphere 2004 and 2005 seasons at The National Stud following an agreement with Shadai Stud.  Helissio (Fairy King-Helice) was successful at Group 1 level 5 times, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and was Three-year-old Colt of the Year and European Horse of the Year.  He entered stud in Japan and Australia in 1998.

 

Dalakhani retired

Dalakhani, the winner of this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has been retired and will stand at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland.  Dalakhani (Darshaan-Daltawa) faced the starter 9 times for 8 wins and a placing.  His wins apart from the l’Arc de Triomphe include the Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby), the Group 1 Prix Lupin and the Group 1 Criterium International.

While on Hong Kong, the rising stars of the turf will tackle international champions in the inaugural Sha Tin Sprint Trophy (Gr.3) run over 1000 metres this weekend. Last year's Champion Griffin and Most Improved Horse, Silent Witness bred by TBNSW member Mr I K Smith of Edinburgh Park Stud, will taken on proven international sprinters All Thrills Too and Firebolt, not to mention the improving Anabatik. Hong Kong Mile champion Olympic Express bred by TBNSW member Emirates Park Pty Limited is also on the comeback trail in the race.

 

Dalakhani wins Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

The locally trained and bred Dalakhani has taken out the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and given the Aga Khan his third success in the event.  Dalakhani (Darshaan-Daltawa) scored from Mubtaker (Silver Hawk-Gazayil) with High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells-Kasora) in third position.  Dalakhani has face the starter 9 times for 8 wins and a placing.  His wins apart from the l’Arc de Triomphe include the Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby), the Group 1 Prix Lupin and the Group 1 Criterium International.

 

Vale - Benny the Dip

Benny the Dip, the winner of the 1997 English Derby has died after suffering an injury in a paddock accident.  Benny the Dip (Silver Hawk-Rascal Rascal) originally retired to Claiborne Stud in Kentucky but has stood the last 3 seasons at Cheveley Park Stud at Newmarket in England until his recent sale to Rathbarry Stud.  He is the sire of this season’s Listed Premio Pisa winner Scalino and the Canadian Stakes winner Buffalo Jump.  Benny the Dip has yearlings available at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale which are from his first British-conceived crop.

Empire Maker retired

Empire Maker, the triple Group 1 winner has been retired to Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky.  Empire Maker (Unbridled-Toussaud) who is the only three-year-old to have won at Group 1 level 3 times in 2003, retired with career prizemoney of US$1,985,800.  Empire Maker’s Group 1 wins included the Florida Derby, the Wood Memorial and the Belmont Stakes.  A service fee of US$100,000 has been set for Empire Maker.

John Size is in eighth position with 4 winners, 3 seconds, 3 thirds, 5 fourths and 3 fifths from 37 runners.

Hussonet leased to Vinery Kentucky for Northern Hemisphere season

Arrowfield Stud the owners of Chilean sire Hussonet, have entered into a lease agreement with Vinery Kentucky to stand the horse for the northern hemisphere season in 2004.  Hussonet (Mr Prospector-Sacahuista) who was Champion sire in Chile in 2000, 2001 and 2002 is the sire of 45 stakes winners including Penamacor (Horse of the Year and Champion at 2, 3 & 4), Printemps (Champion 3YO filly), Wild Spirit (Champion 3YO filly), Mar De Kara (Champion 2YO & 3YO filly), Franbulo (Champion Older Horse) and Perssonet (Champion 3YO colt).  A fee for Hussonet has not been set as yet.

 

Falbrav records 7th Group 1 win

Falbrav recorded his seven Group 1 win when he scored in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes recently.  Falbrav (Fairy King-Gift of the Night) was successful from Russian Rhythm with Tillerman in third position.  Falbrav’s Group 1 wins have been recorded in Italy, Japan, France and England and range in distance from a mile to a mile and a half.
