Karaka Attracts
World's Top Bloodstock Buyers
This
year’s record-breaking Karaka yearling sales has given the New Zealand
thoroughbred a greater international profile on the world stage than ever
before, according to New Zealand Bloodstock co-owner Peter Vela.
Two of the most powerful horse buyers engaged in a titanic bidding duel
over the star lot of the sale, the Danehill-Encens filly from the Velas'
Pencarrow Stud. Irish bloodstock
buyer Adrian Nicoll managed to outbid the all-powerful Coolmore Stud to secure
the sale-topper for $1.3 million. The
Premier yearling sale average, aggregate and median all smashed previous sales
records. The average of $137,395 was
up 23 per cent on last year's average of $111,955.
The aggregate for the three-day Premier Sale was $53,446,500, up 20 per
cent on last year, and was a record aggregate for the number of lots sold.
The median price was also a new record at $90,000 - up 24 per cent from
2004 - which reflected a huge growth in the all-important middle market.
Some 84 of the 389 lots sold at the Premier Sale fetched at least
$200,000 while more than half of the lots sold for $90,000 or more.
The last 16 southern hemisphere stock of Danehill to sell at Karaka sold
for $8,455,000 at an average price of $528,438.
