Hunter Valley sires do well in New
Zealand
Twelve
sires who got their progeny from use in the Hunter Valley were
represented by two-year-old winners in New Zealand in the 2004-05 racing
year. In order of most money these sires are Danehill (seventh),
Fusaichi Pegasus, More Than Ready, King of Kings, General Nediym, Orpen,
High Yield, Quest for Fame, Xaar. Grand Lodge, Fasliyev and Catbird. In
addition Made of Gold, a resident at the Eldon Park Stud in Victoria,
had a winner from his only New Zealand two-year-old starter. Danehill
had the biggest representation of these sires, supplying five
competitors for three winners. At the head of the New Zealand juvenile
list for the year was Almutawakel, a Machiavellian shuttle sire who won
the Dubai World Cup, with three winners and NZ$398,875. The next two by
earnings were Howbaddouwantit (by the Blushing Groom sire Rahy) with
four winners and NZ$300,849 and then Cape Cross, a Green Desert champion
older European miler who had two winners and NZ$211,370. A top young
European sire, Cape Cross is at Darley in the Hunter Valley this year.
The two most successful sires on the general New Zealand sires list by
earnings who got their runners from use in Australia were Canny Lad
(Woodlands Stud, Hunter Valley) with one winner from three starters and
NZ$312,615 and the deceased Danehill. The now deceased former super sire
from his use at Coolmore in the Hunter Valley had eight winners from 13
runners and a collect of NZ$190,145. Four sires who sired their runners
in New Zealand but who are standing 2005 in Australia were higher up the
money list. They are Danasinga (by Danehill ), fifth most successful
with 47 winners and NZ$724,103; Cape Cross, tenth with 30 winners -
oldest three-year-olds - and NZ$593,457; Rhythm (USA) (by Mr
Prospector), 11 winners, NZ$460,800; and Desert Sun (GB) (by Green
Desert), 16 winners, NZ$376,200. Danasinga and Rhythmn are both
available at Paul Higgins' Baerami Thoroughbreds at Baerami Creek,
Hunter Valley and Desert Sun, the sire of Sunline, is at Lee Fleming's
Eliza Park Stud, Kerrie, Victoria, Desert Sun's sire, the big Danzig
influence Green Desert, also provided New Zealand's champion sire of
2004-05 in the ever consistent Volksraad. Based at the Windsor Park Stud
at Cambridge, he finished with 71 winners of 109 races and NZ$1,489,916.
His nearest rival was Sir Tristram's great sire son Zabeel (Patrick
Hogan's Cambridge Stud) with 30 winners of 52 races and NZ$1,256,642.
However, Zabeel had far more runners in Australia where he was runner up
on the sires list to Danehill with $10,309,100.

Tattersalls Sale-Topper George
Washington Storms to Guineas Favouritism
2004
Tattersalls October Part 1 saletopper GEORGE WASHINGTON stamped himself
as a colt with a massive future with an effortless eight length triumph
in the first European two-year-old Group 1 contest of the year.
Purchased by Demi O'Byrne on behalf of Coolmore supremo John Magnier for
1,150,000 guineas, the colt from the penultimate crop of the great
DANEHILL earned quotes as low as 4 1 for next year's 2000 Guineas after
his eight length demolition job in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, and drew
a glowing tribute from jockey Kieren Fallon who declared after the race,
"I've never got a feel like that before, ever!" Out of the
13-year-old Listed placed ALYSHEBA mare BORDIGHERA, GEORGE WASHINGTON is
the half-brother to Champion and multiple Group 1 winner GRANDERA, and
was consigned to last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1
from Paul and Sarah Thorman's Trickledown Stud. The only seven figure
yearling sold in Europe last year, GEORGE WASHINGTON is the fifth
Tattersalls saletopper to win at Group/Listed level in 2005, following
the Group 2 and 3 wins by IMPERIAL STRIDE and ALL TOO BEAUTIFUL
respectively and the Listed wins by the Classic placed filly MONA LISA
and the world record breaking filly MY TYPHOON. BORDIGHERA's GRAND LODGE
yearling colt, an own-brother to GRANDERA and a half-brother to GEORGE
WASHINGTON, looks set to be one of the highlights of Part 1 of this
year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, where he will be consigned
from Bobby Donworth and Honora Corridan's Round Hill Stud. The colt is
one of 19 yearlings from the last crop of GRAND LODGE to be offered at
Part 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale which takes place from
Tuesday 4th - Friday 7th October.

Flying Spur Continues to Roll Out
the Winners
FLYING
SPUR ’S evergreen Northern
Hemisphere bred son OSTERHASE put paid to a quality field of
sprinters in Ireland on Sunday with a game win in the G3 Phoenix
Sprint Stakes over 6f at the Curragh. Osterhase was posting the 9th
win of his career and his 5th at stakes level to bring his earnings
close to 300,000 pounds. OSTERHASE built his reputation at this
venue last summer when breaking the five-furlong track record in the
Listed Richard H Fraught Memorial Stakes. The admirably consistent
Osterhase showed his usual blistering early speed in the Phoenix Sprint
Stakes and refused to relinquish his lead despite the late threat of G1
winner Balmont. In fact, the field of 15 contained no less than three G1
winners as well as the highly talented 2 & 3YO Democratic Deficit
who trailed in 13th. Fourth in the G1 Prix de L ’Abbaye last year,
Osterhase could be Longchamp-bound again in October although a tilt at
the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes will be considered. The G3 win of Osterhase came
hot on the heels of Flying Spur’s extraordinary season in Australia in
2004/05 where he captured the Champion Sire by Winners title with
an all time high of 127 winners, 16 more than second placed Zabeel and
20 more winners than Encosta De Lago when he took out the title with 107
winners last year (in the 2003/04 season). Flying Spur’s 127 winners
in Australia won 212 races with a further 219 seconds and 191 thirds
with his progeny registering a staggering 622 first three finishes for
prizemoney of $5.68 million. Flying Spur’s tally of winners wasn’t
just about quantity. Among his 127 winners there were 11 stakeswinners
and a further 17 stakesplaced runners for a grand total of 28 stakes
performers in 2004/05. Only Danehill (21), Zabeel (18) and Redoute ’s
Choice (15) sired more stakeswinners in 2004/05. Flying Spur’s major
winners in the season just gone included G2 winners Spuruson, Trezevant
and Wager as well as the likes of Brannigan, Creative Plan and Amtrak.
Overall, he had 5 stakeswinning colts and 6 stakeswinning fillies.
Flying Spur finished 6th on the General Sires list in 2004/05 and he has
got off to a flying start in the first week of the new racing season in
Australia having already sired 6 individual winners including the John O
’Shea trained colt Primus who created a huge impression on debut at
Canterbury last Wednesday. Flying Spur’s fee in 2005 is $33,000 incl

Excellent Year for British Sales
Houses
British
Sales houses have enjoyed one of their best years on the tracks at home
- and July's results continued that trend. To add to the earlier Group
One successes of sales graduates like Motivator and Cape Of Good Hope,
both Pastoral Pursuits (4h Bahamian Bounty), in the Darley July Cup, and
Proclamation (3c Kings Best), in the Cantor Spreadfair Sussex Stakes,
took G1 events in July. In total, seven of Britain's 18 G1 races so far
this year have been won by horses to have gone through a British sale.
That's good going. The British yearling sale season gets underway on
September 6 with 520 Lots catalogued for Doncaster's four-day St Leger
Sale. Both Cape Of Good Hope (25,000guineas) and Phoenix Reach
(36,000gns) are G1-winning graduates this year of the sale. After that
attention turns to Tattersalls where a selection of Europe's most finely
bred youngsters go up for auction in their October Yearling Sale Part 1.
