Quinella to Arrowfield in First
Griffin Race in Hong Kong
Arrowfield
bred and sold the two year olds INSPIRATION and MONEY MAN that
ran the
quinella
in the first race for Griffins (2YOs) in Hong Kong on 19 February 2006.
Both colts were sold by Arrowfield at the 2005 William Inglis Easter
Yearling Sale and continue the success that Arrowfield sales graduates
have enjoyed in recent years. Inspiration, by Arrowfield stallion
FLYING SPUR out of the Last Tycoon mare LA BAMBA, was
purchased for $420,000 by Gary Moore Racing at Easter last year. Trained
by Gary’s brother John Moore for owners Mr & Mrs Hui Sai-Fan,
Inspiration brilliantly won the HK$750,000 Nigato Plate over 1000m by
1¾ lengths in the fast time of 57.6 seconds. Inspiration is the second
winner produced by La Bamba to race in Hong Kong following on from her
3yo son Lucky Unicorn (by Redoute’s Choice) who has won three
of his five starts to date. In addition to her two winners in Hong Kong,
La Bamba is also the dam of stakeswinning Redoute’s Choice filly PROVENCE
who was purchased from Arrowfield at the 2003 William Inglis Easter
Yearling Sales. La Bamba hails from a family that is a prolific producer
of stakeswinners which includes triple G1 winner Dracula as well as
Inspiration’s close relation BRANNIGAN who is also by Flying
Spur. La Bamba has an Orientate yearling filly selling at this year’s
Easter Sale. Money Man is by fellow Arrowfield stallion REDOUTE’S
CHOICE out of the Bluebird mare WHAT A JOY, who incidentally
is a half sister to La Bamba. Purchased for $280,000 by Apollo Ng as
Agent at Easter last year, Money Man is trained by Casper Fownes for
owner Wilfred Ng. Although he found Inspiration too slick on the day,
Money Man finished half a length ahead of the third placegetter First
Baby. What a Joy had an Orientate colt sell for $100,000 to Magus Equine
at this years Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Inspiration and Money Man
are just the latest success stories to graduate from Arrowfield yearling
sales drafts. This season’s undefeated filly MISS FINLAND (by
Redoute’s Choice ex Forest Pearl), who currently is joint favourite
for next week’s G1 Blue Diamond Stakes, made $450,000 at the
2005 William Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. Another recent sales success
for Arrowfield is the 2005 Champion 2YO Filly and multiple G1 winner Fashions
Afield, who was sold at the 2004 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Arrowfield will take its best draft ever this year to the Melbourne
Premier Sale (March 5th, 6th and 7th) offering 38 yearlings under both
its own banner and that of its wholly owned Bellerive Stud. This draft
features progeny of its exciting new sires Hussonet, French Deputy and
Orientate as well as yearlings by proven stallions Danzero, Flying Spur,
Dehere, Red Ransom and Encosta de Lago. Arrowfield and Bellerive will
offer a further 60 yearlings at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale (April
18th to 20th).

Tattersalls Graduate Vague Wins UAE
1000 Guineas
The
Jeremy Noseda trained filly VAGUE ran away from her rivals to record an
exciting victory in the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas at Nad Al Sheba and
continued the amazing run of Tattersalls graduates at the Dubai
International Racing Carnival. Under the guidance of Mick Kinane, the
daughter of ELUSIVE QUALITY recorded her third victory and remains
unbeaten on her only two starts in Dubai for her owner, Californian
based Canadian J Paul Reddam. VAGUE was purchased at the 2005
Tattersalls December Mare Sale by London based bloodstock agent Jamie
McCalmont for 300,000 guineas on behalf of Reddam, for whom he also
purchased 2004 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup winner WILKO. Whilst the UAE Oaks
in three weeks beckons for VAGUE, connections indicated that a tilt at
the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks was also being considered. The win of VAGUE
completed a double for Noseda following the win earlier in the evening
of MONTGOMERY'S ARCH in the Tabloid Cup. A 20,000 guineas graduate of
the 2004 Tattersalls Breeze Up Sale, MONTGOMERY'S ARCH recorded his
third victory having won the Group 2 Richmond Stakes and and being
placed in the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes as a two-year-old. The
other Tattersalls graduates to win on the eight race card were SIR EDWIN
LANDSEER, a 23,000 guineas graduate of the 2003 Tattersalls Autumn
Horses in Training Sale, who won the Entertainment Plus Trophy over 6
furlongs whilst the SINGSPIEL colt ROCK MUSIC recorded his second
successive victory on the Nad Al Sheba dirt when winning the Aquarius
Cup for Godolphin.

Records fall at Tattersalls February
Sale
MARGARET
RIVER and a yearling by SELKIRK shared top billing at the one day
Tattersalls February Sale when they sold for 92,000 guineas apiece
whilst a new record for turnover was posted. A total of 203 lots were
sold for 1,957,900 guineas, up 22% on last year's corresponding sale,
for an average of 9,645 guineas and a median of 4,200 guineas. MARGARET
RIVER, the unraced three-year-old filly by SEEKING THE GOLD out of the
ZILZAL mare MENIATARRA was purchased by locally based bloodstock agent
Hugo Lascelles for 92,000 guineas after he outlasted Tattersalls' Martin
Mitchell who was taking phone bids from Dublin-based bloodstock agent
John McCormack. MARGARET RIVER, a grand-daughter of the Oaks winner SNOW
BRIDE, the dam of Derby and Arc de Triomphe winner LAMMTARRA, was
purchased by Lascelles on behalf of United States based clients and he
indicated that the filly would probably be covered by MONTJEU in Ireland
before heading stateside. The SELKIRK colt out of the MACHIAVELLIAN mare
FIRST EXHIBIT was the first of four yearlings consigned from Kirsten
Rausing's Lanwades Stud, on behalf of Matthews Breeding and Racing. The
grandson of Matthews' two-time Group 1 winner MY EMMA was the equal top
priced lot for the day at 92,000 guineas when secured by Irish pinhooker
Paddy Twomey after he outlasted a spirited effort by fellow Irishman Ger
Hourigan. The final of the four Matthews yearlings was the filly by
DOMEDRIVER out of the NIGHT SHIFT mare PORTELET. The half-sister to
Group 2 Champagne Stakes winner ETLAALA was purchased by Yeomanstown
Stud's Gay O'Callaghan for 62,000 guineas after stiff competition from
underbidder Seamus Burns and Niarchos' Alan Cooper. National Hunt
prospects were in demand at Tattersalls, none more so than the
three-time winner AMORIST who scored an impressive all the way win at
Lingfield over 10 furlongs twelve days ago. Consigned from Sir Mark
Prescott's Heath House Stables in Newmarket, AMORIST was purchased by
Irish bloodstock agent Bobby O'Ryan for 80,000 guineas on behalf of
owner Graham Wylie and trainer Howard Johnson. Wylie and Johnson have
enjoyed great success buying Heath House Stables consigned lots at
Tattersalls with Cheltenham Festival winners INGLIS DREVER and NO REFUGE
both graduates of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale. The
twelve strong consignment from Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms
realised a total of 228,800 guineas with the filly PURPLE VISION proving
the most popular at 56,000 guineas. The daughter of RAINBOW QUEST out of
the NORTHERN DANCER mare KAMKOVA is a half-sister to Group 2 winner and
sire KIRKWALL and was purchased by Yorkshire based bloodstock agent
James Delahooke. EXPECTATION, the dam of Group 2 Richmond Stakes winner
ALWAYS HOPEFUL proved the most popular of the mares on offer when she
sold for 70,000 guineas to Emerald Bloodstock's Brendan Gallagher. By
NIGHT SHIFT out of the ADONIJAH mare PHANTOM ROW, EXPECTATION was
purchased by Gallagher on behalf of a group of Irish Breeders who intend
to send her to the recently retired three-time Group 1 winner WHIPPER.
At the conclusion of the 2006 Tattersalls February Sale, Tattersalls
Chairman Edmond Mahony commented; "It was never going to be easy to
follow a year as spectacular as 2005 where a record turnover was
recorded at every sale, so it's very pleasing to begin 2006 in such a
positive manner, with another record turnover. "The February Sale
has grown in size from year to year and it was encouraging to see so
many familiar faces at the seventh edition of what is now an important
fixture on the sales calendar. A cosmopolitan cast of buyers is a
feature of any Tattersalls sale and it was a great pleasure to welcome
buyers from many European countries as well as Egypt, Kuwait and the
United States to complement the typically strong English and Irish
clientele. "The support of many of Europe's leading owner/breeders
has allowed the February Sale to grow in both size and quality and we
look forward to it's continued expansion."

New
Zealand Bloodstock's 10th anniversary at the helm of the National
Yearling Sales Series at Karaka has marked significant growth to the New
Zealand industry over the past ten years. In 1997, New Zealand
Bloodstock's first year conducting the National Yearling Sales following
the purchase by Peter and Philip Vela of Wrightson's Bloodstock Ltd, the
Premier Sale average was NZ$60,258. In ten years, the final sale average
across all three sales sessions is now in excess of that figure, at
NZ$63,012. The expectation leading into the Sale was that results were
unlikely to exceed the record-breaking results of 2005. This was
supported by general comment from buyers that the overall strength of
the catalogue was down on previous years. New Zealand Bloodstock General
Manager, Andrew Seabrook, remarked, "New Zealand Bloodstock is
acutely aware of the necessity to present the strongest catalogue
possible and that in order to attract buyers from our leading markets,
in particular from Australia, we need to stem the flow of our top
yearlings to Australia. "We are on the whole pleased with the
outcome of this year's Sale, given that the quality of the catalogue
presented was not as strong overall as previous years. Our aim is to
address this as a matter of urgency and we will be canvassing breeders
and vendors in the coming months to discuss these vital issues now
facing our industry." The top ten lots for the sale were:

Graduates Win Six Out of Seven at Dubai Carnival
The
Tattersalls success story at the Dubai International Racing Carnival
continued with Tattersalls graduates winning a remarkable six of the
seven races on a night of top quality racing. DUBAI HONOR, a 120,000
guineas John Ferguson purchase at the 2000 Tattersalls October Yearling
Sale started the ball rolling in the opening Dubai Cast House Trophy
over 9 Furlongs on the Nad Al Sheba dirt. Bred by Fares Stables the
gelding's win was followed by another impressive dirt performance from
the improving four-year-old colt ROCK MUSIC in the Dubai Trophy over a
mile. The son of SINGSPIEL, another John Ferguson purchase from Part 1
of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, was the first winner of 2006
for the mighty Godolphin team. Bred by Mrs John Chandris out of the high
class sprinting mare STACK ROCK, ROCK MUSIC was sold for 90,000 guineas
and looks set for a successful 2006 after his comfortable 2 ¾ length
defeat of the high class Argentinian bred LITTLE JIM. The Dubai Stakes
over a mile on turf was an even more graphic reminder of the Tattersalls
influence with the first five home all graduates from sales held by the
Newmarket based auctioneers. The winner CASHIER, a striking grey son of
ALHAARTH bred by Lord Vestey out of his top mare CASHEW, was the third
leg of a John Ferguson hat-trick on the night and another who looks set
for a fine year ahead. Purchased for 360,000 guineas at the same sale as
ROCK MUSIC, CASHIER has won or been placed in all of his six starts to
date for trainer John Gosden, and his year older half-brother AZAROLE, a
45,000 guineas purchase at last year's Tattersalls Autumn Horses in
Training Sale, finished third with 170,000 guineas Tattersalls Houghton
purchase DESERT DESTINY second. Continuing the run was bargain 11,000
guineas Autumn Horses in Training purchase MUHAREB, who was the second
winner on the night for local trainer Doug Watson. Another to prove the
versatility of Tattersalls graduates by winning on the dirt, MUHAREB was
winning his third race on the bounce for owner Prince Turky Bin Bader
beating 75,000 guineas Tattersalls Breeze Up purchase CLASP into second.
CAESAR BEWARE was another impressive winner on the night leading home
another Tattersalls 1-2-3 in the valuable Dubai Potline Cup over 7 ½
furlongs on the turf. The DAGGERS DRAWN four-year-old bred by Glending
Blodstock, was purchased at the 2002 Tattersalls December Foal Sale by
Lakin Bloodstock for 12,000 guineas, and the gelding has now won four of
his seven career starts and more than £300,000 in prize money. Second
was the multiple Listed winner SUGGESTIVE, a 9,000 guineas Tattersalls
December Foal purchase, and third was SABBEEH, a 140,000 guineas
Tattersalls October Yearling. Last of the sextet was another bargain buy
in a race where the first five home were all purchased at Tattersalls.
The Dubai Plate over a mile on the turf was won by the Andrew balding
trained PENTECOST who was purchased at the 2000 Tattersalls Autumn
Yearling Sale for 5,000 guineas. Bred at Downclose Farm the
seven-year-old gelded son of TAGULA out of BOUGHTBYPHONE has now won
eight races and more than £250,000 in prize money. A nose back in
second was the Christian Wroe trained SPIRIT OF FRANCE, a 49,000 guineas
purchase at last year's Autumn Horses in Training Sale, with the fast
finishing 230,000 guineas Houghton purchase FALSTAFF in third.

2006 Tattersalls Ireland September
Yearling Sale Date Change
The
2006 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale is to take place a week
earlier than previously advertised. The three day sale will now take
place from Tuesday 5th - Thursday 7th September rather than 12th - 14th
September. Commenting on the decision Tattersalls Ireland Chairman
Edmond Mahony said: "Our original dates clashed with yearling sales
in North America and when the earlier week became available we felt that
it would benefit both vendors and purchasers to take advantage of a week
that does not coincide with any other Northern Hemisphere yearling
sales. In addition, the redevelopment of Doncaster Racecourse has seen
the bulk of the St Leger Meeting relocated to York on Friday 8th and
Saturday 9th September which means that the September Yearling Sale will
also avoid coinciding with any major race meetings. "It looks
likely that we will revert to our usual week in 2007 but for this year
it makes perfect sense to stage the September Yearling Sale in a week
that is free of any other distractions. After the record breaking 2005
sale the new date will help us to continue to build on that success and
we look forward to receiving entries in the coming weeks and to
beginning yearling inspections early in the Spring.

Tattersalls February Sale
The
catalogue for the 2006 Tattersalls February Sale, which takes place on
Thursday 9th February, is available online at www.tattersalls.com
and from Tattersalls and Tattersalls representatives now. The one day
sale, now in its seventh year, has attracted a record entry of 351 lots.
The sale comprises yearlings of 2006, broodmares in foal, horses and
fillies in training from many of Europe's leading owner/breeders and the
ever popular stallion parade at which recently retired Group 1 winners
AVONBRIDGE, FIREBREAK, PASTORAL PURSUITS and STARCRAFT will be amongst
the 15 stallions on show. One of the highlights of the catalogue looks
set to be the Listed winning four-year-old CELTIC SWING filly SLIP DANCE
consigned from Eamonn Tyrell's Clunemore Lodge Stables in Ireland on
behalf of owner Michael McLoughlin. The five-time winner, twice at
Listed level, is also a half-sister to MISU BOND, Bryan Smart's Listed
winning three-year-old who is as short as 40-1 for this year's 2000
Guineas. SLIP DANCE is out of the WARNING mare HAWALA who realised
280,000 guineas at the 2005 Tattersalls December Mare Sale. Amongst the
mares on offer, EXPECTATION looks certain to attract plenty of interest
as the dam of 2005 Group 2 Richmond Stakes winner and twice Group 1
placed ALWAYS HOPEFUL. The twelve-year-old NIGHT SHIFT mare will be
consigned from Lostford Manor Stud and is in foal to ALWAYS HOPEFUL's
sire MIND GAMES. There are also mares offered in foal to proven Group 1
sires BAHAMIAN BOUNTY, BERTOLINI, CADEAUX GENEREUX, MONSUN, PEINTRE
CELEBRE and TIGER HILL and to the exciting young sires FANTASTIC LIGHT,
CHOISIR, EXCEED AND EXCEL, FALBRAV, HAAFHD, KYLLACHY, NAYEF, REFUSE TO
BEND, RESET and TOBOUGG. The largest consignment, numbering 18 lots,
comes from Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, and features ten
three-year-old fillies, five three and four-year-old colts and geldings
and three mares in foal. Amongst the fillies are STARZARI, the
OBSERVATORY half-sister to last year's Listed winning and Group 2 Prix
Niel second RUNAWAY from the family of DANCING BRAVE and JOLYPHA, and
STARLIST, the OBSERVATORY half-sister to Listed winner BIG MOMENT from
the family of EVA LUNA and BRIAN BORU. The three mares on offer include
BALLETA, an own-sister to the aforementioned DANCING BRAVE and JOLYPHA
and dam of the Listed winning and Group 1 Prix Morny placed BARRICADE.
Kirsten Rausing's Lanwades Stud has an exciting consignment of six
yearlings, which features four on behalf of Matthews Breeding and Racing
including the colt by SELKIRK out of FIRST EXHIBIT, who herself sold for
240,000 guineas at the 2005 Tattersalls December Sale. By MACHIAVELLIAN,
FIRST EXHIBIT is a half-sister to MOMENTS OF JOY who realised 1,650,000
guineas at the 2005 Tattersalls December Sale, and out of Group 1
Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille winner MY EMMA who sold for 1,300,000
guineas at the same sale. Another yearling sure to attract plenty of
interest from the Matthews consignment is the DOMEDRIVER half-sister to
Group 2 Champagne Stakes winner and Group 1 July Cup third ETLAALA. A
total of 59 yearlings are catalogued including those by Group 1 sires
CAPE CROSS, MONTJEU, PEINTRE CELEBRE and ROYAL APPLAUSE whilst first
season sires include CAPTAIN RIO, DUBAI DESTINATION, HAWK WING and NAYEF.
Commenting on the catalogue, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;
"Last year's February Sale saw rises across the board, and the size
and quality of this year's catalogue suggests that the sale can continue
its upward momentum. We have received good support from many of the top
British based consignors as well as from Ireland and throughout Europe,
and the strength of last year's December Sale suggests that we can look
forward to a successful opening sale of 2006.
