Son of Octagonal wins the Prix d’Ispahan

Octagonal’s leading European performer Laverock has taken the first major open-age Group One contest of the 2006 French racing season by landing the Longchamp Prix d’Ispahan over 1850m. A Group One placegetter at two and the 2005 French Derby third (subsequently disqualified) at three, Laverock was having his second outing of the year in the set weights feature when landing the time honoured contest with a typical late-driving finish. Ridden back in the field in a slowly run contest, the top-class son of Octagonal produced a brilliant turn of foot in the straight to charge through the field, before holding off the late challenge of Manduro of win by a neck. In describing the performance, Britain's daily thoroughbred racing journal Racing Post reported: "[Laverock] did well to come from towards the rear given the way the contest panned out, the four-year-old flashing home to secure a narrow verdict." It added: "This was an admirable effort by the winner." The first major test of each new French racing season for older horses, the Prix d’Ispahan is invariably won by a top-class performer. Indeed, past winners of the event include the champion racemares Miesque (1988) and Indian Skimmer (1989), as well as Arrowfield Stud's globetrotting Group One winner Falbrav (2003) to name but a few. Owned by Gainsborough Stud and trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias, the 4-year-old’s record now reads 13 starts for four wins, one second and three thirds for the equivalent of £206,212 in career earnings. Connections are now looking towards the Royal Ascot Prince of Wales’s Stakes on June 21 as his next assignment.

  The World’s Leading Horses (from 29th October 2005 to 7th May 2006)

The second publication this year of the World's Leading Horses covers the racing period from Breeders Cup Day (29th October 2005) to the Kentucky Derby (USA), Stan James 2000 Guineas (UK) and Champions Mile (HK) 6th/7th May 2006. SHIROCCO (GER) (125) takes over at the head of the rankings from Hurricane Run (who did not race in the period under review) by virtue of his win in the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (2400m). It was encouraging to see him make a successful reappearance at Newmarket last weekend with an imperious victory in the G2 Jockey Club Stakes. ELECTROCUTIONIST (USA) (124) who won the Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup in March moves up a place to second. Three impressive recent winners have joined DAVID JUNIOR (USA) and HEART'S CRY (JPN) on a rating of 123 in third spot. Firstly, Japan's 2005 Horse of the Year, DEEP IMPACT (JPN) who won the JPN G1 Tenno Sho (Spring) over 3200m in facile fashion. Following the first major Classic races in the Northern Hemisphere both winners have entered the WLH for the first time. BARBARO (USA) (123) was gaining his fourth Graded victory of the year and his second in Grade One company when becoming one of the most impressive Kentucky Derby winners in recent times. A few hours earlier, GEORGE WASHINGTON (IRE) gained his third Group One victory with an impressive win in the Stan James 20000 Guineas at Newmarket. Other newcomers to the World's Leading Horses are CORRE CAMINOS (FR) (120) who won the G1 Prix Ganay (2100m) impressively and EREMEIN (AUS) (119) the leading Australian entry. The winner of five G1 races to date, Eremein (AUS) has looked dominant from 2000m to 2400m with recent wins in the Ranvet, BMW and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The G1 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup runner-up in Hong Kong, BEST GIFT (NZ) (formerly Carlisle Bay) appears with a rating of 118 having earlier finished third to OUIJA BOARD (GB) in the G1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase. Others to top their categories are, SILVER TRAIN (USA) (119) leading Sprinter (Dirt) and TAKEOVER TARGET (AUS) (118) the leading Sprinter (Turf). The highest ranked filly or mare on Dirt is Breeders' Cup Distaff winner PLEASANT HOME (USA) (118) while OUIJA BOARD (GB) (117) and PRIDE (FR) (117) share the leading filly or mare on the Turf. The next listing will be published early in July. The World's Leading Horses are compiled by the World Rankings Supervisory Committee and published by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA).   Cathay Pacific HKIR prize-money swells to HK$62m

The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races have received a significant prize-money boost to consolidate the December meeting's position as the Turf World Championships. An injection of HK$6 million takes overall prize-money for the four international Gr.1 races to HK$62 million (US$8 million). Meanwhile the distance of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint stretches to 1200m from 1000m to attract participation from the best international sprinters. "The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races Day has earned reputation for prestige and excellence, but we cannot rest on our laurels. To maintain its status as the Turf World Championships, it is our duty to upgrade prize-money and amend the programme where necessary," said Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Executive Director of Racing. "The world's leading owners and trainers have increasingly recognised the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races as the end of year championship for the world's best turf thoroughbreds and it has helped place Hong Kong Jockey Club as one of the global leaders of international racing," he added. Mr Charlie Stewart-Cox, General Manager, Marketing for Cathay Pacific said: "Cathay Pacific is delighted that the increase in prize-money announced today will further cement the position of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races as the Turf World Championships. There is no doubt that this day of international racing, of style and glamour has become one of the greatest days in sport in Hong Kong. Fans from all around the world are drawn to Sha Tin and we are proud to be the official sponsor of such a world class event." Several of international racing's brightest stars have, down through the seasons, contributed towards positioning the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races as the Turf World Championships. Turf greats the quality of Sunline, Ouija Board, Falbrav, Silent Witness, Fantastic Light, Eishin Preston et al have created some of the defining moments in Hong Kong sport and Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges is confident enhancing the meeting's prize-money will foster more memorable days in the future - especially with HKJC partners Cathay Pacific lending their support for a third year. Now worth HK$12 million from HK$10 million - HK$10,000 per metre, the same as the Mile and the Cup - the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint has been extended to six furlongs to attract higher-quality speed horses from overseas for the final leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. The Club believes extending the race to 1200m and improving total prize-money will result in stronger international competition. Hong Kong-based sprinters have dominated over the specialist five-furlong distance of late, winning the race for the last four years and filling the first five positions in 2005. On the other hand, none of the top European and Japanese sprinters to contest the seven renewals to date have finished better than fourth. The quality of the overseas challenge is set to improve considerably, but this is necessary given the depth of local sprinting ranks. The HK$16 million Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile also regains its richest turf mile ranking from the Yasuda Kinen and the Breeders' Cup Mile, while the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase will continue to be valued at HK$14 million. The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup has been Hong Kong's richest race since its inception as an international event in 1988 and with its purse now lifted to HK$20 million, it reasserts its standing as the richest turf event in the world - and one of the very best - over 2000m. The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races will be the world's richest day of turf racing with between 35 and 40 elite international stars facing up to the cream of the Hong Kong crop. These horses are partnered by champion jockeys and prepared by champion trainers. It is a fantastic and unique sporting occasion, the greatest on the Hong Kong calendar and, in the opinion of many, the best international day of racing in the world.

Hussonet Sires A Stakes Treble Across Three Countries

As Australia waits on the much anticipated first Australian bred runners by HUSSONET to race later this year, the rest of the world watches on as his Chilean bred runners continue to take the world by storm. HUSSONET sired three stakeswinners last week in three different countries: USA, Chile and Argentina. His 3YO daughter LA CHIFLOTA was the first to salute when she became his latest North American stakeswinner taking out the Thirty Flags Stakes (L) at Belmont Park over 1600m last Wednesday. The aptly named 3YO filly ARROWFIELD claimed her first stakes win beating home two other Hussonet fillies in the Minicipalidad de Pirque (L) over 1300m at Club Hipico de Santiago in Chile on Friday. Hussonet then capped off the weekend when his undefeated 2YO son HUSSON maintained his perfect record to win the G1 Gran Criterium over 1600m on turf in Argentina on Saturday. LA CHIFLOTA, one of 14 champions sired by Hussonet, was purchased by Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stables last year after the filly’s 2YO campaign in Chile. It was a week of mixed blessings for Lael Stables as La Chiflota’s stakes win was followed by the tragic injury to their homebred Kentucky Derby hero Barbero in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. La Chiflota, a G1 winning 2YO in Chile, is out of an Icecapade line mare and is therefore bred on a similar cross to Hussonet’s North American G1 winning daughter Wild Spirit. Having her third North American start, and the sixth of her career, La Chiflota has never been out of a place and registered her third win with a comfortable one length advantage in the Thirty Flags Stakes. Hussonet is now the sire of six stakeswinners in the Northern Hemisphere from just 38 runners. Hussonet continued his dominance of Chilean racing (he leads the sires table with more than double the earnings of his nearest rival this season) siring the trifecta in the Minicipalidad de Pirque (L). The winner ARROWFIELD became her sire’s 90th stakeswinner with a commanding win over two Hussonet stakeswinners in Noche Oscura and Hospitably. The margins were 1¾ lengths by 8 lengths in the good time of 1.14.47 for the 1300m. Hussonet’s Argentine star HUSSON kept his perfect record unblemished with a ¾ length victory in the G1 Gran Premio Gran Criterium on Saturday at San Isidro. The flashy chestnut son of Hussonet covered the mile on the turf in 1:32.88 for this third win in as many starts. Husson entered the race off an impressive eight-length triumph in the G1 Gran Premio Raul y Raul E. Chevalier on April 9 at San Isidro. He will now target next month’s G1 Gran Premio Carrera de las Estrellas Juveniles at Palermo. Hussonet stands at $38,500 incl GST for the 2006 Australian breeding season.

New Sires Showcase at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale 2006

Tattersalls Ireland announces The New Sires Showcase Sale which will open the Premier Session of the 2006 September Yearling Sale (5th – 7th September). The New Sires Showcase will consist of 40-50 yearlings all by stallions with their first crop of yearlings. Each yearling will be carefully selected based on a combination of pedigree and conformation and the session will run alphabetically by dam’s name. Any yearlings by first season sires already nominated to the sale will be evaluated and any consignors wishing to enter further first crop yearlings should do so before the July 2nd entry deadline. Commenting on the innovation, Tattersalls Ireland Chairman Edmond Mahony said; "Yearlings by first season sires have traditionally attracted a huge amount of interest from purchasers and we are keen to harness this interest by showcasing some of the best individuals by exciting young stallions. We are delighted with the initial response to the concept and in particular from studs standing first season stallions who see the ‘New Sires Showcase’ as an ideal opportunity to promote their young sires." As ever all yearlings sold at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale will be eligible for the €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Sales Stakes, which will take place at the Curragh in August 2007. The Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale has gone from strength to strength in recent years with graduates of the 2004 Sale including the Group 1 performers WAKE UP MAGGIE and UGO FIRE, as well as Listed winners MISU BOND and SIR XAAR, while 2005 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner SAOIRE and Italian 1,000 Guineas and multiple USA Grade 2 winner SILVER CUP were both purchased at the 2003 sale. Owing to calendar changes in the autumn sales programme this year, the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale will take place earlier than usual from 5th – 7th September with the New Sires Showcase Sale opening the Premier session on the first day.

Sale Topper George Washington Leads Tattersalls 2,000 Guineas Clean Sweep

GEORGE WASHINGTON, the 1,150,000 guineas sale topper at Part 1 of the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, established himself not only as one of the best 2,000 Guineas winners seen for many years with his devastating display in the first British Classic of the season, but also as one of the great bargain buys of recent years for the Ballydoyle team. The regally bred son of DANEHILL is now the winner of three Classic/Group 1 races from only six starts, has amassed £504,724 in prize money and has a value so far in advance of his purchase price as to make it seem insignificant. Few horses, even from the all-conquering Ballydoyle Stable, have evoked so many superlatives and the brilliance hinted at in a glittering two-year-old career became irrefutable reality as GEORGE WASHINGTON, owned in partnership by Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, led home a 1-2-3-4 for Tattersalls sold yearlings in the mile contest. GEORGE WASHINGTON, bred by Roy and Gretchen Jackson who also bred and own spectacular Kentucky Derby winner BARBARO, was consigned to Part 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale from Paul and Sara Thorman's Trickledown Stud and was the highest priced yearling sold in Europe in 2004 when knocked down to Demi O'Byrne for 1,150,000 guineas. Out of the Listed placed ALYSHEBA mare BORDIGHERA, GEORGE WASHINGTON is a half-brother to the Champion and multiple Group 1 winner GRANDERA who was owned by the Jacksons before being purchased by Godolphin. If ever there were a race to showcase the extraordinary quality and strength in depth to be found at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales it will be the 2006 Stan James 2,000 Guineas with runner-up and current Vodafone Derby favourite SIR PERCY a 16,000 guineas purchase at Part 2 of the October Yearling Sale, and the third and fourth placed OLYMPIAN ODYSSEY and ARAAFA costing 75,000 guineas and 150,000 guineas respectively at the same sale as GEORGE WASHINGTON.

Super Day of Selling at Inaugural NZB National Weanling Sale

The change of format paid off for New Zealand Bloodstock at the National Weanling Sale at Karaka on 7 May 2006, with buoyant results recorded at the inaugural stand-alone Sale. Marketing & PR Manager, Petrea Vela, commented "It was a great day of selling at Karaka today. There were plenty of buyers ringside and good competition for good quality lots. There's a definite feeling that people are encouraged by the imminent changes to New Zealand's industry, with a predominantly local buying bench bidding and buying with confidence. We are very pleased that the new format has proved a success and has provided the ideal foundation for us to build on in the future." From 271 lots catalogued for sale, 202 were sold for an average of NZ$11,406, an aggregate of NZ$2,304,000 and a very healthy clearance rate of 84%. Last year's Weanling Session at the National Broodmare, Weanling & Mixed Bloodstock Sale recorded a combined weanling average of NZ$8,345, representing a 37% increase this year. Similarly last year's median has leapt 107% to NZ$6,000. The turnover has increased by 17% for 34 fewer horses sold. The standout story of the day was Waikato vendor, Curraghmore Stud, who accounted for six of the top 12 lots of the Sale. Top price was paid by Mark & Shelley Treweek of Lyndhurst Farm, who parted with NZ$150,000 for a colt by Galileo from Last Tycoon mare, Liberty Song. This is the first year a stand-alone weanling Sale has been conducted at Karaka. Last year's weanling session comprised part of New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale. This year broodmares and mixed bloodstock will be offered in the National Sale in August. Full statistics for the sale are as follows:-
