Tattersalls December Foal Sale
Starts in Spectacular Style
The
Tattersalls December Foal Sale got off to a spectacular start with
turnover up 99% on last year's opening session, the average up 56% and
the median also rising 76%. With a total of 216 foals sold, the turnover
was 2,110,600 guineas, the average 9,771 guineas and the median 6,500
guineas while the top lot, a colt by SINGSPIEL who sold for 70,000
guineas broke the previous opening day record price. Four time Group 1
winner SINGSPIEL recorded victories in the Japan Cup and the Dubai World
Cup for his owner Sheikh Mohammed before taking up stallion duties at
Dalham Hall Stud outside Newmarket, and the son of IN THE WINGS has
enjoyed another good year with Group 1 winners in Japan, Europe and
North America. His success on the racecourse has been mirrored in the
sale ring and his only offering on the opening day of the Tattersalls
December Foal Sale topped proceeding's at 70,000 guineas to the bid of
Penmarric Stud principal Michael English. Catalogued as lot 520, the
colt out of the winning DANZIG mare KATINA was consigned from the Earl
of Derby's Stanley House Stud. A further thirteen foals by SINGSPIEL are
catalogued over the remaining three days of the foal sale. Another
Darley stallion to hit the headlines on the opening day was the Group 1
Queen Anne Stakes winner DUBAI DESTINATION. The son of KINGMAMBO has a
total of twenty-nine of his first crop foals catalogued and the first of
them was lot 553, a colt out of the GREEN DESERT mare GIORGIA RAE,
herself an own sister to Listed winner and Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes
second ROWAASI. Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, the colt was
purchased by Lynn Lodge Stud's Eddie O'Leary for 60,000 guineas after he
saw off the efforts of Rathbarry Stud's Liam Cashman and Rathmore Stud's
Peter Molony. The progeny of the National Stud's stallion BAHAMIAN
BOUNTY have been in great demand this year following the Group 1 wins of
the own brothers PASTORAL PURSUITS and GOODRICKE and lot 542, out of the
ABSALOM mare CHRISTMAS ROSE, continued the trend when selling for 50,000
guineas. The colt, who was consigned from David Redvers' Tweenhills Farm
& Stud, was knocked down to David O'Callaghan, son of Yeomanstown
Stud's Gay O'Callaghan after he outlasted locally-based bloodstock agent
Margaret O'Toole, standing alongside Eddie O'Leary. The sale represented
a good return for Redvers who purchased CHRISTMAS ROSE in foal to
BAHAMIAN BOUNTY at the 2004 Tattersalls December Mare Sale for 33,000
guineas. An even better return from a mare purchased at the 2004
Tattersalls December Sale was that enjoyed by Tattersalls Director
Martin Mitchell. Mitchell purchased the NORDANCE mare DANCE LAND for
8,000 guineas on behalf of a partnership and sent the mare to Paul and
Sara Thorman's Trickledown Stud in Hampshire. DANCE LAND subsequently
foaled a COMPTON PLACE colt who was offered as lot 563 and Mitchell and
partners were left celebrating when the colt was purchased by Irish
bloodstock agent Peter Doyle for 44,000 guineas on behalf of Irish
pinhooker Ciaran 'Flash' Conroy. Underbidder on the colt was another
Irish pinhooker Paddy Twomey.

Records Shattered at Tattersalls
December Yearling Sale
A
son of SADLER'S WELLS topped the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale as
records for turnover, average and median were shattered on the opening
day of the Tattersalls December Sale. In total, 167 lots sold for
4,314,600 guineas, a rise of 53% on last year's sale, whilst the average
and median rose 29% and 4% to 25,836 guineas and 14,000 guineas
respectively. A total of eight yearlings sold for 100,000 guineas or
more compared with two at last year's sale. Early in the evening lot
217, the SADLER'S WELLS colt out of the Group 3 winning PURSUIT OF LOVE
mare LOVE EVERLASTING topped proceeding's when he sold for 260,000
guineas to the bid of London-based bloodstock agent Charlie
Gordon-Watson. Middleham trainer Mark Johnston, who trained LOVE
EVERLASTING, was prominent early, but the battle to secure the colt soon
developed into a head-to-head duel between Gordon-Watson and Kern/Lillingston
Association's Luke Lillingston, standing alongside Newmarket trainer
Michael Bell. The colt, consigned from Sonia Rogers' Airlie Stud was
knocked down to Gordon-Watson after Lillingston failed to answer his bid
of 260,000 guineas. Gordon-Watson had earlier purchased lot 136, the
KING'S BEST half-brother to Group 2 winner IMPERIAL STRIDE and Group 3
winner HIGH PITCHED for 130,000 guineas. Consigned from Peter Stanley's
New England Stud, the son of the Listed placed SADLER'S WELLS mare PLACE
DE L'OPERA was purchased for a new client and will go into training with
Ed Dunlop. The second highest price of the day was the 210,000 guineas
paid for lot 128, a bay colt by FANTASTIC LIGHT out of the Listed
winning and Group 2 Falmouth Stakes placed mare CROESO CARIAD. Consigned
from Kevin and Sue Mercer's Usk Valley Stud in Wales, the easy moving
colt boasted one of the best pedigrees in the catalogue, with CROESO
CARIAD a half-sister to this year's multiple Group 1 placed MONA LISA
from the family of the legendary REPROCOLOR. Newmarket based trainer
William Muir, standing alongside Japanese owner Takashi Kurisaka made
much of the early running, alongside locally-based bloodstock agent
David McGreavy who was to end up the underbidder, but neither could
withstand the efforts of Darley's John Ferguson who finally landed the
colt for 210,000 guineas. Kurisaka did not, however, go home empty
handed, with the Tokyo based businessman outlasting Belgian bloodstock
agent Thierry Storme for lot 175, a bay colt from the first crop of
four-time Group 1 winning juvenile JOHANNESBURG out of the Listed placed
WOLFHOUND mare ROZEL. Consigned from Gay O'Callaghan's Yeomanstown Stud,
the colt was knocked down for 105,000 guineas and Kurisaka indicated
that the horse would join Lambourn based trainer William Muir, before
heading to Japan. Middleham trainer Mark Johnston was very active
throughout the day, purchasing eleven lots for a total of 482,000
guineas. The highest priced of these was the 160,000 guineas given for
lot 174, a bay colt by sire-of-the-moment MONTJEU out of the Listed
placed INDIAN RIDGE mare COYOTE, herself a daughter of the Group 2
Falmouth Stakes winner CARAMBA. Consigned from The Castlebridge
Consignment, Johnston secured the colt after seeing off the determined
efforts of London-based bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson and
Chevington and Loughton Studs' Felipe Hinojosa. Johnston had earlier
secured lot 62, a son of SELKIRK out of the Listed winning SADLER'S
WELLS mare INCHIRI for 100,000 guineas. The colt, consigned from
Woodcote Stud, was sold to Johnston with Hinojosa again unsuccessful.
After another spectacular year it was no surprise to see a son of
Cheveley Park Stud's top stallion PIVOTAL featuring prominently and lot
219, the colt out of the winning LE BALAFRE mare MOONBABY was the third
highest priced lot of the day when selling to Irish bloodstock agent
Peter Doyle for 165,000 guineas. Doyle, who saw off the efforts of
another Irish-based bloodstock agent Bobby O'Ryan indicated that the son
of PIVOTAL, consigned by European Sales Management, was purchased for a
new client.

Record Bid by Maktoum at Keeneland
Representatives
of two of the most powerful warriors ever seen at bloodstock sales, John
Magnier (Coolmore) and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum (Dubai),
engaged in such a frenetic tussle over the one horse, the four-year-old
filly Ashado, on 7 November 2005, the opening day of the huge November
Breeding Stock Sale at Keeneland, Kentucky, the final price of
US$9million was a new world record for a broodmare or broodmare
prospect. The Maktoum camp won out on this occasion with their bid being
nearly $2million above the previous world record for a mare,
$7.1million, which was paid at the same sales in 2003 by Magnier for
Cash Run, a Seeking the Gold Breeders' Cup Juvenile fillies winner. The
new mare price set this year by Maktoum is the fourth highest ever for a
bloodstock auction, being surpassed at earlier Kentucky sales by
yearlings at $13.1million (1985, named Seattle Dancer), $10.2million
(1983, Snaafi Dancer) and $9.6million (for a Storm Cat yearling colt
offered in September). Retired this month after a third placing in the
American Breeders' Cup Distaff, an event she won at three, Ashado has
been successful in 12 races including seven Group1s, the others
including the Kentucky Oaks and Coaching Club American Oaks. Her
earnings of US$3,931,440 make her the second highest female earner in
American racing history. The one in front of her is Azeri with
$4,079,820, a long way behind that credited to the Australian queens
Makybe Diva and Sunline. Azeri is by the Mr. Prospector sire Jade Hunter
and from Zodiac Miss, an Ahonoora filly bred at the Arrowfield Stud in
the Hunter Valley. The new record priced mare, Ashado, is by the
deceased Halo sire Saint Ballado and from the Listed winner Goulash, a
daughter of the Northern Dancer sire Mari's Book and the unplaced
Blushing Groom mare Wise Bride. Ashado is the only Group 1 winner in the
family for six generations.

Solid Trade at Tattersalls October
Yearling Sale Part 3
The
Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 3 concluded with 124 lots sold
for 836,000 guineas, at an average of 6,741 guineas and a median of
5,000 guineas. The top price during the day was the 46,000 guineas given
for Lot 1741, a bay colt by BAHAMIAN BOUNTY out of the EL GRAN SENOR
mare SANGRA. The colt, consigned from Swallow Hole Farm on behalf of Mr
David Forecast was the subject of a bidding duel between Newmarket
trainer William Haggas and Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown. Brown,
who was standing alongside another Newmarket trainer Neville Callaghan
and his son Simon eventually proved triumphant when Haggas exited the
ring, refusing to increase his bid of 45,000 guineas. The sale was yet
another success for the National Stud's BAHAMIAN BOUNTY whose progeny
were very well recieved at Parts 1 and 2 of the October Yearling Sale
following 2005 Group 1 sprint victories for his sons PASTORAL PURSUITS
and GOODRICKE. Late in the evening bloodstock agent Geoffrey Howson went
to 31,000 guineas to secure a colt from the first crop of Darley
stallion BEST OF THE BESTS. Consigned from Lavington Stud on behalf of
Sunley Stud, the colt out of the winning WOLFHOUND mare SUNLEY SCENT
went to Howson after he outbid locally based bloodstock agent Oliver
Gaisford-St Lawrence of McKeever St Lawrence. The top price during the
morning session was the 30,000 given for Lot 1597, a brown filly by
TOMBA out of the POLAR FALCON mare CHERISH ME, herself an own sister to
Listed Zetland Stakes third POLAR ECLIPSE. Consigned from Box Hedge Hall
Stud, the filly was purchased by Yorkshire based bloodstock agent Gill
Richardson who indicated that the filly would head to trainer Kevin
Ryan's Hambleton Lodge stables in North Yorkshire. Ryan has enjoyed a
spectacular year with his two-year-old's PALACE EPISODE and AMADEUS
WOLF, winners of the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy and Group 1 Middle Park
Stakes respectively, and both graduates of this year's Tattersalls
Breeze Up Sale. At the conclusion of Part 3 of the Tattersalls October
Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:
"October 2005 has been a month on which the British and Irish
bloodstock industries can look back with considerable satisfaction, and
it has concluded in an equally satisfactory manner today at Part 3 of
the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. "Although today's Sale has
been some way removed from the heights achieved at Parts 1 and 2, it has
proved to be a good solid outlet for commercial yearlings, and given
another ringing endorsement to the small format changes that we
introduced to our yearling sales this year."

Tattersalls Autumn Horses in
Training Sale Continues Record Run
The
Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale concluded with new records
for turnover, average and median as 224 lots were sold on the fourth day
for 2,941,400 guineas, at an average of 13,131 guineas and a median of
7,000 guineas. This took the four day total to 896 lots sold for
19,652,800 guineas, a rise of 6% on last year's record sale, with the
average rising 1% to 21,933 guineas and the median remaining constant at
12,000 guineas. The top price on the final day was the 150,000 guineas
paid for Dr Christoph Berglar's four-year-old gelding SWEET WAKE. The
son of WAKY NAO was rated 113 by 'Timeform' following victory in the
Group 2 Grosser Mercedes-Benz-Preis at Baden-Baden and a close-up fourth
to SOLDIER HOLLOW in the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich.
Consigned for Berglar by German agent Ronald Rauscher, SWEET WAKE was
keenly sought after by Natioanl Hunt connections including agent Gerry
Griffen, standing alongside Cumbrian trainer Nicky Richards, who
purchased Aintree Grade 1 Novices' Hurdle winner FAASEL at this sale
last year. However, Griffen was unable to better locally based
bloodstock agent Margaret O'Toole who secured the gelding for 150,000
guineas. O'Toole said that SWEET WAKE was purchased on behalf of an
existing owner and would join Champion Irish National Hunt trainer Noel
Meade at his Co. Meath base. The winning two-year-old colt RIGHT AGAIN
looked to be one of the outstanding lots on the final day, following his
fourth in the Group 3 Weatherbys Superlative Stakes behind subsequent
Group 1 winner and current second favourite for next year's 2000 Guineas
HORATIO NELSON, and Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes winner and Breeders' Cup
Juvenile prospect LEO. The battle to secure the the son of LUJAIN,
consigned from Millrace Stables, came down to a head-to-head duel
between the VIP Thoroughbreds duo Robert Harrison and Herman Brown and
bloodstock agent Gordion Troeller, standing alongside Californian
trainer Bob Hess Jnr. Harrison and Brown, buying for the Dubai Racing
Carnival pushed the price past the six-figure barrier, but were unable
to match Troeller and Hess who finally landed RIGHT AGAIN for 145,000
guineas.
