  Callaghan Pair Headline Third Day of Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale

The Neville Callaghan trained duo KILWORTH and HAZYVIEW filled two of the top three spots on another strong day of trading on the third day of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale. There were 221 lots sold on the third day of the sale for a total of 6,281,800 guineas, an increase of 26% on last year's corresponding session. This pushed the average up 26% to 28,424 guineas and the median up 2% to 13,000 guineas. The two-year-old colt KILWORTH registered a significant catalogue update when he finished second in the recent Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket fixture transferred from Ascot. The son of KALANISI, rated 105 by 'Timeform' and consigned from Callaghan's Rathmoy Stables in Newmarket, saw interest initially from Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown and Shawn Drysdale, wife of California based trainer Neil Drysdale. The pair were soon joined by bloodstock agent Gordon Troeller, standing alongside Californian trainer Bob Hess and Newmarket trainer David Loder. The battle for the colt soon developed into a head-to-head duel between Troeller and Loder as the price rose above the 300,000 guineas mark and it was Loder, bidding in a quick and confident manner, who finally securing KILWORTH for 360,000 guineas, the second highest price ever paid for a two-year-old colt at this sale. The CAPE CROSS colt HAZYVIEW is no stranger to the Tattersalls sales ring, have been sold as a foal, yearling and most recently as a horse in training at this sale 12 months ago. On that occasion Tom Mohan, who owned the horse in partnership with Callaghan, bought out his partner for 350,000 guineas. The horse stayed in training with Callaghan and registered victories in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes and Listed Midsummer Stakes this year. On his fourth appearance at Tattersalls HAZYVIEW was again in great demand with yet another Californian based trainer Chris Paasch and Loughtown and Chevington Stud's principal Felipe Hinojosa both prominent early. Locally based bloodstock agent Richard O'Gorman soon entered the fray with another local agent Anthony Stroud, and it was Stroud who eventually landed the four-year-old colt for 310,000 guineas. Stroud indicated that the colt would most likely participate in next year's Dubai Racing Carnival, having been purchased for an existing client. The draft from Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms is always highly sought after and this year was no exception with the 37 lots offered realising 1,463,000 guineas at an average of 39,541 guineas. The highest of these was the 320,000 guineas given for the three-year-old colt PALOMAR. A winner on his first start, the son of CHESTER HOUSE was also placed third in the recent Group 3 Prix de Lutece behind SHAMDALA at Longchamp and interest in the colt came from all quarters of the British and Irish National Hunt fraternity, with Lambourn trainer Nicky Henderson and Bloodstock Ireland's Kevin Ross, standing alongside dual-purpose trainer Tony Martin both making the early running. Cropredy handler Paul Webber soon joined in along with Sir Robert Ogden's racing manager Barry Simpson, but when the price reached 320,000 guineas Webber waved the white flag and the colt's next start will be in the famous Ogden colours, with the trainer yet to be decided. Owner John Fretwell and trainer Eoghan O'Neill have enjoyed a spectacular year, led by their Group 2 Richmond Stakes winning two-year-old colt ALWAYS HOPEFUL. The son of MIND GAMES, who was also placed at Group 1 level in the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes, looked to be one of the most exciting two-year-olds in the catalogue and interest in the colt was widespread from the outset. Californian trainer Chris Paasch, standing with agent Gordian Troeller came closest to securing the two-time winner, but failed to withstand the efforts of Hong Kong based agent Willie Leung, who made the winning bid of 270,000 guineas. Leung, who purchases under the name of Magus Equine, also purchased ESCAPE PLAN, the next lot through the ring, who was also consigned from Fretwell and O'Neill's Averham Park Farm. Leung secured the Listed-placed two-year-old son of KEY OF LUCK for 85,000 guineas and indicated that both he and ALWAYS HOPEFUL would continue their careers in Hong Kong.

  Kerashan sells for 300,000 Guineas at Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale

The Aga Khan's progressive KERASHAN topped the second day of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale on a day when 240 lots were sold for 6,499,300 guineas, at an average of 27,080 guineas and a median of 17,000 guineas. Turnover for the day was up 10% on last year's corresponding session while the average and median rose 4% and 6% respectively. KERASHAN, a three-year-old son of SINNDAR, owned by The Aga Khan and consigned from Sir Michael Stoute's Freemason Lodge Stables in Newmarket, entered a packed sale ring late in the evening. Interest in the two-time winner who was rated 107 by 'Timeform' came initially from Kern/Lillington's Alastair Donald before Dublin-based bloodstock agent John McCormack and Newmarket trainer David Loder locked horns, sending the price skyward with Loder victorious at 300,000 guineas. The consignment from Freemason Lodge was in high demand as only nine lots earlier STREAM OF GOLD was sold to Anthony Stroud Bloodstock's Richard Venn for 220,000 guineas. The four-year-old colt, owned by Ballymacoll Stud, won the prestigious Lincoln Handicap in March and was fourth in the Group 3 Select Stakes at Goodwood, beaten only 3 1/4 lengths behind subsequent Group 1 Champion Stakes victor DAVID JUNIOR on his last start. Venn secured the son of RAINBOW QUEST, an own brother to multiple Group 1 winner SPECTRUM, after resisting the efforts of Saudi Arabian owner Khalid Al Qahtani and Cheveley Park Stud's General Manager Chris Richardson. The four-year-old colt MOSS VALE, three times a Listed winner and placed six times in Group 2 and 3 events, always looked to be one of the highlights of the sale and did not disappoint when selling for 260,000 guineas to the bid of Irish bloodstock agent Bobby O'Ryan. The son of SHINKO FOREST, owned in partnership by Cheveley Park Stud and John Grant, was consigned from Barry Hills' Faringdon Place Stables and it was Cheveley Park Stud's General Manager Chris Richardson who was underbidder to Bobby O'Ryan. O'Ryan revealed that MOSS VALE was purchased on behalf of Lady O'Reilly and would go into training with Dandy Nicholls at his Yorkshire base. Earlier in the day a trio of colts from Richard Hannon's East Everleigh Stables broke the six figure barrier in the space of 10 minutes. The first was KINGS QUAY, a two-time Listed winning three-year-old by MONTJEU who was purchased by Yorkshire-based trainer John Quinn for 110,000 guineas as a jumping prospect. Two lots later the two-year-old ORPEN colt GENRE was sold for 140,000 guineas to Kern/Lillingston Association's Alistair Donald. The colt had won his previous two starts at Doncaster and Windsor by an aggregate of 12 lengths and was purchased for United States based owner David Mueller and will join Californian-based Englishman Ben Cecil at his Santa Anita training base. The following lot GRAMM, a winner at Newmarket on October 13, was purchased by London Thoroughbred Services' James Wigan for 110,000 guineas to join Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani at his Bedford House Stables.

  Shermeen Tops Opening Day of Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale

SHERMEEN topped proceeding's on the opening day of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale at 160,000 guineas as 211 lots were sold for 3,930,300 guineas, at an average of 18,627 guineas and a median of 11,000 guineas. Jamie Lloyd and Jim Ford will be hoping history repeats itself after they purchased the two-year-old DESERT STYLE filly SHERMEEN for 160,000 guineas from Jamie Osborne's Kingsdown Stables. It was at the 2003 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale that the two-year-old filly TICKER TAPE, also consigned from Kingsdown Stables, was purchased by a partnership including Ford before going on to establish herself as one of the top turf fillies in North America with two Grade 1 wins last year. SHERMEEN recieved a timely catalogue update recently when she finished third in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes and the daughter of the COMMON GROUNDS mare COVER GIRL is set to go into training with Lloyd who has recently set up a training base at Santa Anita racecourse in California, following stints as assistant trainer to Paddy Gallagher and TICKER TAPE's trainer Jim Cassidy. The filly was purchased for a partnership comprising Ford, Jim Stutts and Rick Holliday after Lloyd saw off the efforts of McKeever St. Lawrence's Johnny McKeever.

Howard Johnson and Graham Wylie have tasted great success at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale having purchased Cheltenham Festival winners INGLIS DREVER and NO REFUGE here in 2003 and 2004 for 110,000 guineas and 180,000 guineas respectively. The pair will be hoping for similar success with the four-year-old LINAMIX gelding TURNSTILE who was purchased by Irish bloodstock agent Bobby O'Ryan on their behalf after he saw off a spirited effort from Timmy Hyde. Consigned from Richard Hannon's East Everleigh Stables, the three-time winner carried a 'Timeform' rating of 93 following victories at Kempton and Hamilton this year. The Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale has been a ready source of Dubai Racing Carnival prospects with Group 1 winner RIGHT APPROACH and Group 3 winner and Group 1 Dubai World Cup fourth JACK SULLIVAN both purchased specifically with the Dubai Carnival in mind. The three-year-old MONTJEU colt HIPPODROME is another destined for a future in Dubai after he was purchased by Robert Harrison for 110,000 guineas. Consigned from Ballydoyle Stables, Naas winner HIPPODROME is set to join South African trainer Herman Brown at his Nad Al Sheba stables after Harrison withstood the challenge of locally-based bloodstock agent Johnny McKeever.

  Maids Causeway and Donna Blini Head Largest Ever Tattersalls December Sale

The Group 1 winning duo of MAIDS CAUSEWAY and DONNA BLINI look set to be the star attractions at the 2005 Tattersalls December Sale which takes place from November 21st - December 1st. In total the catalogues number a record 2944 lots, comprising 1281 foals, 1383 broodmares and fillies in training and 267 yearlings. The regally bred MAIDS CAUSEWAY, owned by Martin Schwartz and trained by Barry Hills, is an enticing prospect combining an outstanding pedigree with an equally outstanding racing career. The three-year-old filly by GIANT'S CAUSEWAY out of the KINGMAMBO mare VALLEE DES REVES is the winner of four races including this year's Group 1 Coronation Stakes and the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes as a two-year-old, and was second in the 1000 Guineas on her seasonal debut in May. In total MAIDS CAUSEWAY has amassed £350,000 in prize money having won or been placed in nine of her eleven starts to date. The two-year-old filly DONNA BLINI provides a rare opportunity not only to buy a Group 1 winning two year old but also a potential Classic winner. The Brian Meehan trained daughter of BERTOLINI is as low as 141 for next year's 1000 Guineas after winning not only the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes, but also the Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes.
The consignors index includes Europe's leading owner/breeders the Aga Khan Studs, Cheveley Park Stud, Darley, Gainsborough Stud Management, Haras de Fresnay le Buffard, Haras du Quesnay, Hascombe Stud, Juddmonte Farms, and Shadwell Stud, while the list of covering sires features all of the current top fifteen active British and Irish sires including GREEN DESERT, INDIAN RIDGE, KING'S BEST, MONTJEU, PIVOTAL, SELKIRK and thirteen time Champion sire SADLER'S WELLS as well as young sires DALAKHANI, DUBAI DESTINATION, EXCEED AND EXCEL, FALBRAV, HAAFHD, HAWK WING, HIGH CHAPARRAL, OASIS DREAM, and REFUSE TO BEND and top overseas sires including ARCH, BAHRI, DIESIS, GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, GULCH, HIGHEST HONOR, JOHANNESBURG, LINAMIX, NUMEROUS, STREET CRY and WAR CHANT. The December Foal catalogue makes equally impressive reading with all of the current top 30 active sires in Britain and Ireland all well represented including CADEAUX GENEREUX, CAPE CROSS, DANEHILL DANCER, GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, GREEN DESERT, INDIAN RIDGE, KING'S BEST, MONTJEU, PIVOTAL, SINGSPIEL and SADLER'S WELLS whose one foal is an own sister in blood to the mighty FALBRAV. Exciting first-crop sires include the Classic and Group 1 winners DALAKHANI, DUBAI DESTINATION, HAWK WING, HIGH CHAPARRAL, NAYEF, OASIS DREAM, OKAWANGO, REEL BUDDY, SPARTACUS, STORMING HOME, TOUCH OF THE BLUES, and WHERE OR WHEN. Commenting on the 2005 Tattersalls December Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said; "This is not only the largest ever Tattersalls December Sale but also one of the strongest catalogues we have assembled for a while. The two Group 1 winning fillies MAIDS CAUSEWAY and DONNA BLINI will undoubtedly attract enormous attention, but the crucial element is the massive strength in depth to both the mares and fillies and also the foals. The December Sale has long been a prolific source of legendary broodmares and the 2005 sale looks to have all the ingredients to entice the usual global cast of buyers." Catalogues for all three sales are online now at www.tattersalls.com and are available from Tattersalls and Tattersalls representatives from Friday, 28th October.

  Records Shattered at Tattersalls October Part 2

The final day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 2 finished with records across the board. The final day saw 116 lots sold for 1,365,900 guineas, 28% more than on the corresponding day last year, with the average rising 35% to 11,775 guineas and the median rising 58% to 10,000 guineas. This took the four day sale total to 636 lots sold for a total of 16,988,400 guineas, a rise of 31% on last year's sale whilst the average and median rose 75% and 80% respectively to 26,711 guineas and 18,000 guineas.

The progeny of Cheveley Park Stud stallion KYLLACHY have been in demand all week and it was fitting that one of his sons topped proceedings on the final day of Part 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Consigned from John Deer's Oakgrove Stud, the son of the LAST TYCOON mare ROYAL JADE is a half-brother to five winners including the Listed-placed MILLION PERCENT. As has been the case all week, demand came from all parts of the ring, with Emerald Bloodstock's Brendan Gallagher and Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown, sitting with Newmarket trainer David Simcock both making bids. James Owen, assistant trainer to Newmarket trainer Ed Vaughan also made a bold effort to secure the colt but was to be denied by veteran bloodstock agent James Delahooke who made the winning bid of 76,000 guineas.

At the conclusion of Part 2 of the 2005 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

" Trade has been little short of phenomenal this week, and it has been a genuine pleasure to see such a wide cross section of vendors so handsomely rewarded not only this week at Part 2 of our October Yearling Sale, but also last week at Part 1. The vendors, British, Irish and from further a field, are the key to the success of our yearling sales. They have presented us with the cream of the European yearling crop and the buyers have responded with unrelenting demand over the last two weeks.

" We have enjoyed record combined turnover over the two weeks, well in excess of 76,000,000 guineas and this week's trade has also seen records across the board. Turnover for Part 2 has nudged 17,000,000 guineas, up around 30% on last year with over 400 less horses catalogued, while the average and median have both soared more than 70%. In addition there have been 19 six figure transactions this week as opposed to five at Part 2 in 2004 and a massive 93 making 50,000 guineas or more as opposed to 33 last year.

" The crucial factors that have made the last two weeks such a success have been the slight changes made to the format and the spectacular run of racecourse successes enjoyed by Tattersalls yearling purchases this year. The likes of MOTIVATOR, SHAMARDAL and GEORGE WASHINGTON give buyers at all levels the confidence to participate, and with so many of this year's top two year olds coming from the 2004 October Part 2, including FLASHY WINGS, ALWAYS HOPEFUL, CLOSE TO YOU and tomorrow's unbeaten Dewhurst contender SIR PERCY, it is little wonder that we have seen buyers queuing up to buy this week. The format changes have also played a vital part. At the end of last year we said that we felt it would be important to manage the numbers in a manner which placed less strain on the market, and I think we have achieved that in both Parts 1 and 2 of the October Yearling Sales. The past two weeks mean that we, and the whole industry, can look forward with a degree of confidence to the remaining 2005 sales at Park Paddocks."

  Tattersalls October Part 2 Thunders On

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 2 continued in a similar vein to the opening two days with unrelenting demand forcing the average and median ever higher. The turnover for the day of 2,689,500 guineas was up 15% on last year's corresponding session, a figure all the more impressive given that there were 91 less lots catalogued on day 3 this year. Once again the average skyrocketed, rising 61% to 20,375 guineas whilst the median rose 64% to 16,000 guineas. The National Stud in Newmarket have had a year to remember, with resident stallion BAHAMIAN BOUNTY enjoying huge success on the racetrack with Group 1 victories for his two sons, GOODRICKE and PASTORAL PURSUITS. The latter's victory in the Darley July Cup was a double triumph, since the Newmarket nursery purchased a share in him last year and will stand him alongside his sire in 2006. The stud had more to celebrate as the consignors of lot 1314, a colt by SAKHEE out of the LOUP SOLITAIRE mare PREMIERE DANCE who was sold to noted breeze up consignor Willie Browne for the day's top price of 90,000 guineas. Tally-Ho Stud's Tony O'Callaghan and bloodstock agent David Redvers both made valiant efforts to secure the colt, with Redvers the eventual underbidder, but the pair were thwarted by Browne who is likely to reoffer the colt at next year's Tattersalls Breeze Up Sale. The National Stud also enjoyed a spectacular pinhooking success earlier in the evening when lot 1293, a CADEAUX GENEREUX colt out of MIDSUMMERNITEDREAM was knocked down to Devon-based trainer Rod Millman for 55,000 guineas, having been purchased at the 2004 Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 9,000 guineas. Later in the evening another son of SAKHEE took centre stage when selling for 78,000 guineas to Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown. Catalogued as lot 1344, the colt out of the winning HAMAS mare SHUKRAN was consigned by Raffin Stud on behalf of Liza Judd and attracted interest from Middleham trainer Mark Johnston and bloodstock agents David Redvers and Geoffrey Howson, with the latter ending up the underbidder. The colt is set to join Neville Callaghan at his Rathmoy Stables in Newmarket. The sale continued the strong demand for yearlings for Shadwell Estate's homebred stallion SAKHEE, whose sixteen yearlings sold at Parts 1 and 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale have averaged 80,125 guineas and included the fillies out of DODO and IMITATION who realised 260,000 guineas and 220,000 guineas respectively.

  Red Ransom Filly Breaks October 2 Record as Trade Soars

Part 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continued in frenzied fashion on day 2 with 202 lots sold for 6,508,500 guineas, at an average of 32,220 guineas and a median of 25,000 guineas. A daughter of RED RANSOM broke the record price for the sale, set only 24 hours earlier, when sold for 270,000 guineas, on a day where 8 lots broke the 100,000 guineas mark in addition to the eleven yesterday. The turnover, average and median posted massive gains of 58%, 60% and 67% compared with last year's corresponding session. Fillies with outstanding pedigrees have been in high demand during Parts 1 & 2 of the October Yearling Sale and one such yearling was Lot 1099, the bay filly by RED RANSOM out of the winning MACHIAVELLIAN mare MASKAYA. Northern trainers Brian Smart and Mark Johnston both made the early running and the pair were joined by Irish bloodstock agent Peter Doyle as the price raced towards 100,000 guineas. Yorkshire-based bloodstock agent Jeremy Brummitt and London-based bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson both entered proceedings and the price quickly soared past the 200,000 guineas barrier and it was not long before yesterday's record price of 210,000 guineas was consigned to the history books. Brummitt and Gordon-Watson traded bids as the price crept beyond 250,000 guineas, finally stopping at 270,000 guineas with Gordon-Watson successful on behalf of Nicholas and Philippa Cooper's Normandie Stud. The sale continued the spectacular run of success for Denis Brosnan's Croom House Stud which also consigned yesterday's 150,000 guineas GALILEO colt as well as a 300,000 guineas DANEHILL colt and a 240,000 guineas SADLER'S WELLS colt at last week's October Part 1 sale. The stud also enjoyed a great pinhooking success today with Lot 957, the MONTJEU filly purchased at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 38,000 guineas and sold for 100,000 guineas to Bill Gredley. Late in the evening, Lot 1192, the colt by INCHINOR out of the Listed-placed mare TARA'S GIRL threatened the record price, falling just 10,000 guineas short at 260,000 guineas. Consigned from Arglo House Stud in Ireland, the easy moving colt saw interest from Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown and Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold, but the pair were unable to hold off the determined effort of bloodstock agent John Corbett, seated with Dubai-based owner Malih Al Basti. The sale represented a massive pinhooking success for his owners, having been purchased as a foal for only ?62,000. Al Basti, whose previous Tattersalls purchases have included Group 3 winner FANTASTIC VIEW, currently has the Group 2 May Hill Stakes winner and Group 1 Fillies' Mile third NASHEEJ in training with Richard Hannon. The two-year-old colt RED CLUBS, winner of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and second in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes this year for trainer Barry Hills, has proven a great advertisement for his dam, the Listed winning FIRST TRUMP mare TWO CLUBS. It was no surprise to see Hills, accompanied by BBA Ireland's Adrian Nicoll bidding on the NOVERRE half-brother to RED CLUBS and he was joined by Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown, standing alongside Newmarket trainer Neville Callaghan in the battle to secure the colt. Peter Doyle joined the fray as the the colt became the eighth yearling to break the six figure barrier for the day, but he was unable to match the 170,000 guineas offered by Darley Stud's John Ferguson. The colt, who is from the first crop of Darley's Group 1 Sussex Stakes winner NOVERRE is the highest priced yearling by his sire to date and was consigned to the sale from Karen Tarry's Islanmore Stud in Ireland on behalf of American breeder Dr John Fike. Yearlings by DANEHILL's son DANEHILL DANCER have been in great demand over the past ten days with eleven of his yearlings selling for 100,000 guineas or more at Part 1 of the October Yearling Sale. Lot 1064, the colt out of the winning CAERLEON mare INTELLECTUELLE became the second son of DANEHILL DANCER to sell for a six figure sum at Part 2 of the October sale, having been sold for 135,000 guineas to the bid of Newmarket-based bloodstock agent Margaret O'Toole. The colt, consigned from Woodcote Stud in Epsom is destined for Irish trainer Charles O'Brien's Baronrath Stables.

  IFHA Update of the World’s Leading Horses 2005

HURRICANE RUN (IRE) stamped himself the top racehorse of 2005 so far with an impressive success in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-Lucien Barrière (Group 1) at Longchamp (2400m / 1m 4f) on 2 October 2005. Overcoming trouble in running the 3yo, whose only defeat in seven starts to date came when he went down by a neck in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly (2100m / 1m 2.5f) in June, stormed clear to put up the highest rated performance of the year thus far (130), and jump to the top of the IFHA's list of the World's Leading Horses. In so doing, HURRICANE RUN deposed the now retired GHOSTZAPPER (USA), the highest-ranked horse in the world in 2004, who had previously also topped the list throughout 2005. However, GHOSTZAPPER's sparkling victory in the Metropolitan Handicap (Group 1) run on Dirt at Belmont Park (1600m / 1 mile) in May, for which he was allocated a mark of 128, puts him in clear second spot in the latest listings, and maintains his position as the top older horse. Third place is shared by AZAMOUR (IRE) and WESTERNER (GB), who are both rated 126. AZAMOUR earned his rating with his win in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Group 1) run at Newbury in July, his first attempt at a mile and a half (2400m). Already the top stayer WESTERNER, whose run of six successive victories in Group races was halted in the 2400m (1m 4f) Grosser Volkswagen Preis von Baden (Group 1) in September, demonstrated his ability at that shorter trip by improving his rating to 126 in finishing a fine second to HURRICANE RUN in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. There is a triple tie for fifth spot between AFLEET ALEX (USA), MOTIVATOR (GB) and SHAMARDAL (USA), all of whom are rated 125. AFLEET ALEX, winner of two of the three legs of the American Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes (Grade 1) at Pimlico in May at a mile and a quarter (2000m) and the Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park in June over a mile and a half (2400m), is currently the leading 3yo on Dirt on the strength of his four and three-quarter length win in the Preakness. MOTIVATOR came home only fifth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe - Lucien Barriere, the first time he had failed to finish in the first two, but earned his rating with his five length victory in the Vodafone Derby (Group 1) at Epsom in June over a mile and a half (2400m). Unbeaten on Turf, SHAMARDAL put up his finest performance when winning the St James's Palace Stakes (Group 1) over a mile (1600m) at York in June. Among his other victories, he was also successful in the Prix du Jockey Club, in which he became the first and, so far, the only horse to defeat HURRICANE RUN. Unfortunately, SHAMARDAL later suffered an injury in training and, like GHOSTZAPPER, he has now been retired. Top older miler on Turf is STARCRAFT (NZ). Formerly a leading performer in New Zealand and Australia, STARCRAFT has won two of the top European Group 1 mile (1600m) races on his last two starts, the Netjets Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and the Barclays PLC Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Newmarket, both in September, earning a rating of 124, and a share of eighth place in the Rankings. SILENT WITNESS (AUS) maintains his position as the leading sprinter on a mark of 123, which he achieved in winning the Chairman's Sprint Prize (HK Group 1) at Sha Tin in April over 1200m (six furlongs). Most recently, he ran to a similar level in taking the JPN Group 1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama (1200m / 6f) on 2 October 2005. Although tasting defeat for the first time, after nine straight wins, in the Group 1 Haras de Fresnay-le Buffard-Prix Jacques Le Marois (1600m / 1 mile) at Deauville in August, DIVINE PROPORTIONS (USA) remains the highest ranked filly in the list, with a rating of 122. Now retired, DIVINE PROPORTIONS earned her rating with her five length victory in the Gainsborough Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Group 1) at Longchamp in May over 1600m (one mile).

The World's Leading Horses are compiled by the World Rankings Supervisory Committee and published by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA). The list of the World's Leading Horses will be published five times this year to give updates on the leading performers worldwide. These listings will be produced in January (following the December WTRR Conference), April (following the Dubai World Cup meeting), August (following the July WTRR Conference), October (following the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting) and November (following the Breeders' Cup meeting). These assessments will also appear on the IFHA website. To merit inclusion, a horse must have achieved its rating within the previous six/seven months. The next listing will be published early in November. The full list and further information on World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings are available on the IFHA web site www.IFHAonline.org

  Records broken on opening day of Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 2
A son of KYLLACHY topped proceedings at a record 210,000 guineas on a remarkable opening day of Part 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. A total of eleven yearlings sold for 100,000 guineas or more, compared to the five at the entire 2004 sale. A total of 224 yearlings were sold for 6,424,500 guineas, a rise of 39% compared with last year's opening session, whilst the average rose 36% to 34,540 guineas and the median rose 30% to 26,000 guineas. Yearlings by KYLLACHY, resident at Cheveley Park Stud and son of their own superstar stallion PIVOTAL, were very well recieved at Part 1 of the October Yearling Sale, and the trend looks to have continued during Part 2. Lot 864, a bay filly by KYLLACHY out of the KRIS mare PLACEMENT was consigned to the sale from Michael Wates' Langton Stud and bids for the half-sister to multiple Listed-winning filly PRESTO VENTO came thick and fast. Newmarket-based trainer William Haggas and Cheveley Park Stud's General Manager Chris Richardson were both prominent early, along with Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown. Yorkshire-based bloodstock agent Gill Richardson entered the fray as the price breached the 100,000 guineas mark along with Manton-based trainer John Gosden. The pair went head-to-head as the price raced towards 200,000 guineas, with Gosden successful when his bid of 210,000 guineas went unanswered by Richardson. The filly was purchased by Gosden on behalf of Princess Haya of Jordon, wife of Sheikh Mohammed. Princess Haya has enjoyed success with Gosden this year with her colt LEO, a 60,000 guineas October yearling purchase last year, winning the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket, and PROCLAMATION, an 84,000 guineas October yearling purchase, who carried her colours to victory in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes for trainer Jeremy Noseda. Dual Derby winner GALILEO has had a promising start to his stud career with the Listed winner INNOCENT AIR and the Listed placed pair of GALILEO'S STAR and GLOBAL GENIUS amongst his better performers from his inaugural crop of two-year-olds. Lot 855, a colt by GALILEO out of the RAINBOW QUEST mare NO QUEST was the only colt on offer by his sire at Part 2 of the October Yearling Sale and interest in the half-brother to Group 3 winner and Group 1 Canadian International second MACAW was high. Consigned from Denis Brosnan's Croom House Stud in Ireland, the colt saw initial interest from bloodstock agents Penny Barnes and Tim Corby as well as Charlie Gordon-Watson, but none of the trio was able to match the 150,000 guineas bid by Newmarket trainer Michael Jarvis. Another colt to sell for 150,000 guineas on the opening day was Lot 711, the bay by DANSILI out of the Listed winning DIESIS mare AUSHERRA, herself an own sister to English, Irish and Yorkshire Oaks winner RAMRUMA. Consigned from Anthony and Mary-Ann Penfold's Bugley Stud, the colt saw initial interest from Lambourn-based trainer Jamie Osborne as well as Anne Haslam, wife of trainer Patrick Haslam. Bloodstock agents Stephen Hillen, Angie Sykes and Will Edmeades all joined proceedings soon after as the price raced towards 100,000 guineas. Competion for the colt soon settled down to a duel between Sykes and Edmeades with Sykes ultimately successful with a bid of 150,000 guineas. The colt is set to join Whatcombe based trainer Paul Cole who trained his Listed winning and Group placed half-brother YORKSHIRE. It was to prove a busy day for Sykes who was also successful in securing two other six figures horses, Lot 725 and Lot 847, colts by MONTJEU and SPINNING WORLD which both sold for 105,000 guineas.

  Records Tumble at Tattersalls October Part 1

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 concluded in robust fashion, with 120 lots selling for 14,302,000 guineas, at an average of 119,183 guineas and a median of 68,000 guineas, taking the four day total to 499 lots sold for 59,635,000 guineas, at an average of 119,509 guineas and a median of 70,000 guineas. The turnover for the four days was up 13% on last year's corresponding figures whilst the average rose 16%. The strength of the sale was reflected by the fact that 99 yearlings sold for 200,000 guineas or more compared with 67 last year, whilst 42 sold for 300,000 guineas or more compared to 28 last year.

Fillies with strong pedigree's have been in demand all week and on the final day it was again a member of the fairer sex who topped proceedings. Lot 659 was such a filly, being the daughter of fourteen-time GB/Ireland Champion sire SADLER'S WELLS out of the Group 3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes winner and Group 1 placed TIME AWAY, herself the grand-daughter of the legendary TIME CHARTER, the multiple Group 1 and Classic winner. Irish-based bloodstock agent Hugo Merry started the ball rolling with an opening bid of 200,000 guineas and was joined in the battle for the regally bred filly by London-based bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson and Newmarket-based trainer John Gosden. Irish veterinarian Demi O'Byrne, standing alongside Michael Tabor and John Magnier, soon entered the fray as the priced passed 500,000 guineas, but it was Gosden who reigned supreme, making the winning bid of 570,000 guineas. The Jamie Railton consigned filly was purchased on behalf of Stanley and Ira Gumberg's Skara Glen Stables and will be sent to Watership Down Stud before going into training with Gosden next year. The sale completed a wonderful week for consignor Jamie Railton who sold 17 yearlings for 2,650,000 guineas, second only to Timmy Hyde's Camas Park Stud who sold 23 yearlings for 3,910,000 guineas.

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale featured the last yearlings to be sold at public auction by DANEHILL and the last of his colts through the ring was lot 630, a bay out of the RED SUNSET mare SUNSET CAFE. Consigned from Seamus Burns' Lodge Park Stud, the half-brother to Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner SEAZUN drew interest from Adena Springs' Frank Stronach and Irish bloodstock agents Peter Doyle and Bobby O'Ryan. Stronach along with Anthony Stroud, who he has been purchasing through, have been very active all week, but they were not willing to match Doyle or O'Ryan who bid 500,000 guineas and 520,000 guineas respectively. That pair were in turn unwilling to increase their bids when Coolmore Stud's John Magnier chimed in with a bid of 550,000 guineas. Seamus Burns was another consignor celebrating at the end of the sale, his six yearlings yielding 1,702,000 guineas.

At the conclusion of Part 1 of the 2005 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

"We have seen a number of individual records broken in the course of the last four days with perhaps the most notable being the record aggregate for a European yearling sale by a very wide margin. In addition the KINGMAMBO colt out of LAST SECOND was a record price for the sale, and at 1,250,000 guineas the highest price for a yearling in Europe this year, while the average has comfortably bettered last year's level.

"Most important, however, has been the overall feel to the sale. There has been a genuine buzz around Park Paddocks from start to finish and the sale format has met with universal approval. After last year's yearling sales we said that we felt the numbers should be controlled more tightly and the decision to cut the numbers and to catalogue alphabetically by dams name throughout the sale has been the key to attracting a greater number of buyers and to keeping them here throughout the week.

"There is no doubt that the high profile successes of recent sale graduates such as MOTIVATOR, SHAMARDAL and GEORGE WASHINGTON have encouraged buyers, and new faces from throughout the world have had a significant impact on what has been a successful week. Part 2 of the October Yearling Sale starts this coming Tuesday and with FLASHY WINGS, ALWAYS HOPEFUL and SIR PERCY all graduates of Part 2 last year, buyers can be certain that there are still plenty of quality yearlings to come for those who have been unable to fill their orders in the last four days."
