Another good result for prominent Australian breeder

It was only a short time ago that TBNSW member Jim Fleming sold a Storm Cat filly at the Keeneland sales for $US3.8million in what is believed to be the highest price for a yearling bred by an Australian breeder. He is now at the Goffs Orby September Sale in Ireland where he has sold his Rock Of Gibraltar-Hula Angel colt for €250,000 (A$400,000) on Day 2 of the Goffs Sale. Hula Angel was the winner of the Gr1 Irish 1000 Guineas in the Fleming colours and now calls New South Wales home, residing at Mr Fleming’s Tyreel Stud.

Starcraft (NZ) Conquers Europe. "Bring on the World", Says Owner.

Backing up from his recent victory in the Group 1 Prix de Moulin at Longchamp, Starcraft (NZ) has secured yet another place in racing history, being the first New Zealand-bred horse to win a Group 1 flat race on English soil. The best that Godolphin and the major European players could bring together for Britain's most prestigious mile, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, including super stars Dubawi and Rakti, were not good enough on the day to roll 'the Anzac invader'. The Anzac tag seems quite appropriate for the chestnut warrior who was born and raised in the lush Waikato region of New Zealand, at Waikato Stud to be precise, and is now proudly owned by The Australian Syndicate, headed by the colorful Queenslander, Paul Makin, whom purchased Starcraft as a yearling from the 2002 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale for just NZ$80,000. The title of Champion Miler of Europe surely is at Starcraft's mercy now, adding to his previous Champion 3YO of Australia title. So what next for the conqueror of both Europe and Australia? The Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championship at Belmont Park, New York on October 29 would certainly provide Starcraft and his owners with the chance to prove their horse the best over a mile in the world. After the triumph at Newmarket Makin said: "It's a short life and this is not a dress rehearsal so he may go for the (Breeders Cup) Classic. I'm only disappointed Ghostzapper was retired. I would also like to take the Sheikh's money in Dubai in March," declared the jubilant owner, referring to the richest race meeting on the planet, the Dubai World Cup meeting in March 2006. Starcraft's current trainer, Luca Cumani, reported that the horse had pulled up in great shape after the run and mooted either the Group 1 Champion Stakes (1800m at Newmarket) on October 15 or the Breeders' Cup Classic as the next target for his charge. Not only is the decision as to where Starcraft (NZ) will have his next start up in the air, so too the conjecture about the current value of the horse as a stallion prospect, which will have skyrocketed with Champion status in both hemispheres looking to be safely under his belt already.

Aussie Rules Gives Kingmambo Half Brother Huge Catalogue Update for Tattersalls October 1 Sale

The Aidan O'Brien trained AUSSIE RULES gave his KINGMAMBO half-brother a massive and timely catalogue update when winning the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket, only five days before the start of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 (October 4th - 7th). The lightly raced son of DANEHILL landed the Group 3 Tattersalls sponsored contest from the Barry Hills trained KILLYBEGS, and added his name to the already extensive list of Ballydoyle Classic prospects for next year in the process. O'Brien indicated that AUSSIE RULES may not be finished for the year, with the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes a possible option. AUSSIE RULES is the fourth foal out of the regally bred Group 2 Nassau Stakes winner LAST SECOND, herself an ALZAO half-sister to the great broodmares ALOUETTE and JUDE, who have produced no less than four Classic and Group 1 winners between them including Kirsten Rausing's Champion filly ALBORADA, also by ALZAO, and Irish 1000 Guineas winner YESTERDAY. LAST SECOND's second foal is the Listed winning DARSHAAN filly APPROACH and her third foal is the highly rated winning DARSHAAN filly INTRIGUED, whose three starts as a two-year-old of 2004 earned her a 105p 'Timeform' rating having finished a close up fourth behind the five time Group 1 winning filly DIVINE PROPORTIONS in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac. The KINGMAMBO colt out of LAST SECOND, who sells on Thursday 6th October, is lot 360 in the forthcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1, and looks set to be one of the highlights of the Sale. The February foal is one of three yearlings in the sale by the Kentucky based star stallion KINGMAMBO, and one of 13 to be consigned from Chris Budgett's Kirtlington Stud. Other eyecatchers from Kirtlington Stud include the DANEHILL colt out of the Group 3 Cherry Hinton Stakes winner APPLAUD, the INDIAN RIDGE colt out of the Listed winner FARFALA, the FANTASTIC LIGHT colt out of the Group 2 winning mare LADY IN WAITING, the SADLER'S WELLS colt out of LAST SECOND's DARSHAAN half-sister SHOWDOWN, and the DIESIS colt out of the Listed winner SOLAIA whose first foal is a 2005 Listed winner

Australian breeder creates a record in America

What is believed to be the highest price for a yearling bred by an Australian was achieved when Sydney based former grocery chain store owner and TBNSW member Jim Fleming sold a Storm Cat filly at the mammoth sale in Kentucky this week for $US3.8million. The highest price for a filly in the first two days of the sale, and the third highest ever for her sex at Keeneland sales, the youngster, one purchased for the giant spending Sheikh Mohammmed al Maktoum of Dubai, is from Warrior Queen, a stakes winning mare which Fleming purchased in America for $US2million in 2002 and put to stud. Owner of the Tyreel Stud in the Hawkesbury Valley, Fleming secured $US1.3million for her first foal, a colt by A.P. Indy and so has already reaped over $US5million on his investment. The filly is one of 38 yearlings which each sold in excess of $US1million on the first two days of the Keeneland sale but most of their prices were dwarfed by the sale topper, a Storm Cat colt out of the dual Group1 winner Tranquility Lake which cost Sheikh Mohammed a record for the sale of $US9.7million. The previous highest price of $US8million was paid at last year's September series for a Storm Cat colt from Welcome Surprise, a close relation of Foxhound, a stakes winning son of Danehill's sire Danzig now standing at John Todd's Allandale Stud at Hobbys Yards near Bathurst, NSW. The world's highest price for a yearling, $US13.1million, was paid at the mid year Kentucky sales in the early 1990s.

New Zealand Listed Waikato Stud Stakes to TBNSW member

When Boudi Woudi saluted in the Listed Waikato Stud Stakes in New Zealand on 3 September 2005, she gave her breeder TBNSW member Mr I K Smith of Edinburgh Park Stud yet another international black type success. Congratulations to Mr I K Smith. Readers may recall that Mr Smith is the breeder of Champion Sprinter and reigning Hong Kong Horse of the Year, Silent Witness. Boudi Woudi (AUS) (Easy Rocking-Yellow and Black) was too good for Echo Maid (NZ) (Made of Gold(USA)-Echo Beach(AUS)) with My Hangover (NZ) (My Halo(ARG)-Hangover Street (AUS)) in third place. Boudi Woudi has only faced the starter 6 times for 2 wins, a second placing and a third placing. This was the first black type success for both Boudi Woudi and her sire Easy Rocking who incidentally was also bred by a TBNSW member, Mrs C B Remond.

Alinghi Wins At Saratoga

Champion Australian filly ALINGHI (2003 William Inglis Premier Yearling Sale $80,000) made a winning debut in North America on 30 August 2005 when she accounted for a top class field of fillies and mares to win the Ballston Spa Breeders’ Cup Handicap Gr 3 over 1700 metres on the turf at Saratoga. Formerly prepared in Australia by Lee Freedman, Alinghi is now in the care of leading US trainer Bobby Frankel who has been singing her praises for the last few months. "She’s a real nice filly, I thought Edgar (Prado) rode a beautiful race and she’s got a tremendous turn of foot," said Frankel. Alinghi was having her first start since finishing fourth in the AJC T.J. Smith Stakes Gr 1 back in March and to win first up over the longest journey she has ever contested was a sensational performance. Alinghi was originally purchased for $80,000 from the Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne by successful Victorian syndicators Slade Bloodstock. The daughter of leading sire Encosta de Lago was named champion two and three year old year old filly in Australia, with 10 wins from 16 starts and prizemoney of $3.4 million. Alinghi was subsequently sold to Arrowfield Stud in a multi-million dollar deal and shipped to America to further her career on the international stage. Alinghi is from the stakes-placed mare Oceanfast, now owned by Yarraman Park Stud and based in the Hunter Valley. "We were so thrilled to see Alinghi win in America and we just hope she can take that next step now and go on. It’s like when Choisir won in England, it’s just such a great thing for our Australian breeding industry," said Arthur Mitchell of Yarraman Park. Yarraman Park sold a half-brother by King Charlemagne (USA) to Alinghi at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year for $525,000, while a yearling full sister to Alinghi has been entered for Easter next year. "She is a big strong filly, lovely temperament and a big backside on her just like Alinghi," said Mitchell. Oceanfast is due to foal to Encosta de Lago in the next two weeks and is booked to visit Redoute’s Choice this spring. "She’s been to Encosta de Lago for the last few years and we thought it was time for a change, you can’t keep going back to the same well all the time," said Mitchell.
