Floral Pegasus reinforces Classic hopes in Mercedes-Benz HK Derby Trial

In a display that virtually screamed 'Derby winner', Floral Pegasus easily took the Gr.2 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby Trial, the feature event on the Chinese New Year programme on 20 February 2007 before more than 85,000 race fans at Sha Tin. Floral Pegasus raced close behind a steady tempo and led with a furlong and a half to race under the guidance of jockey Gerald Mosse. The Frenchman, riding his 400th winner in Hong Kong, only had to flick the reins a chestnut son of Fusaichi Pegasus to score by a length and a half from Viva Macau. The outcome also provided a replica finish to last month's Gr.1 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic Mile. Down Town emerged with credit to take third place having set the sedate pace. "He's a super horse. He has the conformation of a sprinter but he has the stamina too. He's out of a Mill Reef mare and his father won a Kentucky Derby. He travels great in the run and I'm looking forward to the Derby with him," winner trainer Tony Cruz said. The sky may well be the limit for the chestnut four-year-old colt: Cruz is also considering the Champions Mile and the Yasuda Kinen later in the season. "Floral Pegasus can handle any ground and he's just as strong over 1400m. He has the class, the speed and he can adapt to all conditions," the trainer added. John Moore, who prepared the runner-up, said Viva Macau's chances had been hindered by a wide trip and slow pace. "Our horse will need some more speed on in the Derby but you would have to say that Floral Pegasus will be tough to beat. He's a genuine Group One horse and he is well clear of us in the ratings," Moore observed. This will be the fourth year that Mercedes-Benz sponsors the most prestigious domestic race in Hong Kong and the deal will continue until 2009. The agreement incorporates the three races set aside for the Classic generation: the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic Mile (Gr.1-1600m), the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby Trial (Gr.2-1800m) and the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby (Gr.1-2000m) itself to be staged on March 18. Elsewhere on a day of top quality racing, Good Ba Ba was a most impressive winner of the Chinese New Year Cup at Class 1 level. The five-year-old, trained by Andreas Schutz, is a graduate of the Hong Kong International Sale having been selected for the Club by Cash Asmussen. Earlier, the 3-D Gold Cup went to the progressive four-year-old, Towering Feeling.

Keeneland's April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale First in North America on Polytrack

Keeneland's 2007 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, the first juvenile auctionin North America to utilize a Polytrack surface for its under tack shows, will be held Tuesday, April 17. A total of 226 horses have been cataloged for the one-day sale, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. (ET). A PDF version of the catalog is now available on-line. Printed catalogs will be mailed Monday, March 5. "This catalog has strong domestic and international appeal, and it has been well supported by our consignors," said Keeneland's Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. Last year's Del Mar Debutante (G1) winner and Eclipse Award finalistPoint Ashley, as well as Nashua Stakes (G3) winnerDay Pass, now a contender for the 2007 Triple Crown, are both graduates of the 2006 April Sale. Other 2006 stakes winning April Sale alumni includeSeek Gold, winner of the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap;Strong Contender, winner of the Dwyer (G2) and Super Derby (G2); andAnew, winner of the True North Handicap (G2). Prospective buyers will have several opportunities to see the April Sale two-year-olds. Keeneland's 2007April Sale Preview, a 90-minute program featuring many of the sale's top prospects, will air the week of March 26 on TVG and HRTV. The sale juveniles also will breeze under tackduring two "Preview Days," on Monday, April 9 and Monday, April 16, beginning at 10:30 a.m. "Given the growing prevalence of synthetic surfaces, especially among tracks on such major racing circuits as Kentucky, California and Illinois, it's important that buyers have a chance to see horses perform on Polytrack," Russell noted. "Polytrack is proving to be a very good training surface. Both Barbaro and Lemons Forever trained over Polytrack just prior to their wins in last year's Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, as did four of last fall's Breeders' Cup winners - Street Sense, Round Pond, Dreaming of Anna and Thor's Echo." Ninety-four different stallions are represented by April Sale juveniles in 2007, including leading sires Awesome Again, Danzig, Distorted Humor, El Prado (Ire), Elusive Quality, Forestry, Giant's Causeway, Gone West, Johannesburg, Kingmambo, Maria's Mon, Mr. Greeley, Point Given, Pulpit, Street Cry (Ire), and Unbridled's Song, among others. Freshman sires with two-year-olds cataloged include Aldebaran, Empire Maker, Harlan's Holiday, Hold That Tiger, Mineshaft, and Vindication, among others.

Curtain call for Silent Witness, the Spirit of Hong Kong

An emotional Archie da Silva, owner of Silent Witness, the most successful and popular horse in the history of Hong Kong racing, reminisced through the tears as the curtain came down on the champion's glittering career on 4 February 2007 at Sha Tin. Silent Witness finished ninth of ten runners in the Centenary Sprint Cup, a race he won in 2004 and 2005 en route to 18 wins - nine at Group One level - record earnings of over HK$62 million and global fame. Overcome by the poignancy of occasion, the charismatic Da Silva sometimes struggled to convey his true feelings about the horse he called "The Spirit of Hong Kong." "He began his career at a time when Hong Kong was in the midst of an economic depression and SARS. He has that fighting spirit that took him through 18 wins, breaking so many records. That same spirit is in me; it's also in the Hong Kong people. He has made us all very proud," he reflected. Amid a crowd of over 27,000, hundreds of Silent Witness' fans sported imitations of Da Silva's black silks with green crossed sashes. These supporters will be given one more chance to say goodbye to their hero when he is paraded at a farewell party Sha Tin on Sunday, February 25. Silent Witness will then retire to 'Living Legends', the international home of rest for champion horses outside Melbourne, Australia. Speaking of today's race, Silent Witness' 29th racecourse appearance, Da Silva said: "You can see yourself that he was never really comfortable in the run. Felix had to drive him along from an early stage and he has come back bleeding on his bumpers. This degenerative condition in his joints means he just can't continue. He can't carry his huge frame in a race without it hurting him." "The main thing is that he has returned safe and sound and now he can look forward to a happy retirement in a fantastic complex in Australia. He deserves nothing less," he added.

Scintillation oozes class in Centenary Sprint Cup

Silent Witness was denied a fairytale finale as Scintillation and Absolute Champion's private battle for the title of Hong Kong's champion sprinter intensified with Scintillation too powerful in the Centenary Sprint Cup at Sha Tin on 4 February 2007. The pre-race hype was, inevitably, dominated by Friday's news that Silent Witness would run for the last time in a race he had won twice on the way to nine Group One wins and 18 wins overall. However, the seven-year-old was off the bridle once the gates opened for the 1000m sprint and could only finish ninth of the ten runners. Scintillation, winning this race for a second year - his third career major in all - was handled with customary cool by Eric Saint Martin for trainer Danny Shum and owners Mr and Mrs Hui Sai-fun and had three-quarters of a length to spare from Absolute Champion, the knockout winner of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint in December over the 1200m distance. Absolute Champion is patently less potent at the minimum distance that is Scintillation's forte; the latter's four wins down the five-furlong straight have all been at Pattern level. "You can never be too confident that they can return to their best form after bleeding but I was lucky to have an owner like Mr Hui. He said I could be extra patient with the horse and not to rush him back. I think this has made the difference," Shum said in reference to Scintillation's bleeding attack in March last year. Looking ahead to the next leg of the Champion Sprint Series, the Chairman's Sprint Trophy, Shum claimed he was undecided as regards Scintillation's participation in 1200m Group One. "The 1000m is definitely his best distance and after that the 1400m trip is second best. I will have to think about it. I also have [up and coming sprinter] Lucky Baby for that race," he said, prompting Saint-Martin to chip in: "I don't think we have a choice. We have to go for it!" "It feels as if Danny is improving the horse," the jockey continued. "Today he was the relaxed I have felt him and I knew he would win from about halfway because he was travelling so well. When I asked him for that bit extra he moved to the front and I just needed to push him out. I knew Absolute Champion was coming at us but we were always going to get to the line first."

Records Tumble At Tattersalls February Sale

A buoyant market at the Tattersalls February Sale got the year off to a promising start at Park Paddocks with a record price, and records for turnover, average and median. A total of 191 lots were sold for 2,268,000 guineas, a rise of 16% on last year's record breaking turnover, whilst the average rose 23% to 11,874 guineas and the median rose 31% to 5,500 guineas. The four lot consignment of yearlings from Paddy Kelly's Ballybin Stud on behalf of Dermot Brennan's Laureldean Stud in Ireland provided the highlight of the one day sale with the Danehill Dancer colt topping the day's proceedings at 190,000 guineas and the Montjeu filly realising 105,000 guineas. The Danehill Dancer colt out of the Listed placed Bahri mare Littleton Arwen strolled with purpose around the ring and caught the attention of Mickley Stud's Richard Kent and Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown who both made much of the early running for the colt. Ashford Stud principal Paul Shanahan and Croom House Stud's Paul McCarten soon entered the fray and the pair traded bids as the price passed the previous sale record of 170,000 guineas, given for Silver Grey Lady in 2000. McCarten finally landed the colt with a bid of 190,000 guineas on behalf of Denis Brosnan's Croom House Stud and indicated that he would be re-offered later in the year at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The next lot in the ring was the Montjeu filly out of the Ballad Rock mare Child Prodigy who realised 105,000 guineas to the bid of Irish agent Denis Sheehy. The half-sister to last year's Group 3 Queen's Vase fourth Road To Manderlay is out of a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner Kutub and was knocked down to Sheehy after he saw off the determined effort of The Castlebridge Consignment's Bill Dwan. Sheehy indicated that the filly was purchased on behalf of Old Carhue Stud in Ireland. Early in the evening Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff outlasted Anthony Stroud Bloodstock's Matt Coleman to secure the unraced three-year-old filly Eclectic Mix for 130,000 guineas from the Juddmonte Farms consignment. The daughter of Zamindar is out of the Group 3 Lancashire Oaks winning Lyphard mare Andaleeb and a half-sister to the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Prophecy, dam of Listed winner Arabesque who is in turn dam of the former high class sprinter Camacho, who stands at Gay O'Callaghan's Morristown Lattin Stud. At the conclusion of the 2007 Tattersalls February Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented; "A record top price of 190,000 guineas, as well as records for average and turnover have ensured a more than satisfactory start to 2007. "With uncertainty over the weather and all the local airports closed this morning we were a little concerned at the start of the day but there has been no shortage of buyers and the 2007 Tattersalls February Sale has very much followed on from last year's outstanding December Sale, albeit at a lower level. The record price for the DANEHILL DANCER colt out of LITTLETON ARWEN from Ballybin Stud's outstanding consignment was the obvious highlight of the day but the most encouraging feature has been the consistent demand from start to finish. "Buyers from Britain and Ireland have been joined by significant numbers from throughout Europe and further afield and any lot with even a hint of quality has attracted plenty of interest. We are always aiming to expand this fixture and the 2007 renewal has confirmed that the February Sale has the potential for further growth." The next sale at Tattersalls is the Craven Breeze Up Sale, Europe's premier two-year-olds in training sale which takes place from April 17-19, followed by the inaugural Guineas Breeze Up Sale on May 3-4.

Silent Witness to retire after Centenary Sprint Cup

Silent Witness, the most successful horse in the history of Hong Kong racing, will be retired after his run in the Centenary Sprint Cup on Sunday, 4 February. Trainer Tony Cruz and owner Archie da Silva have made the decision in view of a degenerative condition in the seven-year-old's hind joints. Silent Witness won 17 straight races from his debut in December 2002 until April 2005, a feat that attracted global attention as it took him beyond the 'unbreakable' records set by his European ancestor, Ribot, and the American champions, Cigar and Citation. This haul included eight Gr.1 wins including two Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint titles and two Champion Sprint Series grand slams during 2003/04 and 2004/05. His 18th success arrived in the Gr.1 Sprinters' Stakes in Tokyo in October 2005. To date he has won over HK$62 million, a Hong Kong record. The Australian-bred son of El Moxie was twice voted Hong Kong's Horse of the Year and three times he took the Champion Sprinter crown. Even more impressively, he was the world's top ranked turf sprinter for three seasons. "It will be an emotional saying goodbye to him after everything he has given us. All the memories will come flooding back, but it's best that he retires now and with honour. Anything else just wouldn't be right for a horse like him," owner Archie da Silva said. "All good things come to an end," Tony Cruz said, although that doesn't disguise the void that will be left in his stable by the horse he described as "The King." "He made us all so proud: Archie and Betty, myself, Felix [Coetzee] his jockey, his stable lads, the riding boys - all my staff we all are very proud to have been associated with Silent Witness. In the end, time has caught up with him and just his sheer bodyweight means that we can't put much more pressure on his legs. It will be very sad to see him go, but it has been a real privilege to have had him in our stable," Cruz said in reflection. Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, also paid tribute to retiring champion. "Silent Witness did so much for Hong Kong racing and no horse has ever made such an impact. When he was in his prime, going all those races unbeaten, he generated unprecedented local and international interest. He was the one horse that everyone wanted to see and I will always remember the thousands of fans flying flags with his colours the day he won 17th straight race. It was historic. I have never seen a sprinter to dominate in the way he did - and do it all so easily. He was amazing," he said. "I would like to congratulate Archie and Betty da Silva for their success with such a unique horse. Also to Tony Cruz and his team for winning 18 races in Hong Kong and Japan and to Felix Coetzee who rode him so well." Connections say Silent Witness will spend his retirement at "Living Legends", the international home of rest for champion horses outside Melbourne, Australia.
