  World record gross at Keeneland

When the huge annual yearling sale at Keeneland in Kentucky had completed on 25 September 2006 after 14 days of selling, the gross was a new world record high of $399,791,800, an increase of four per cent on the previous best, the 2005 turnover. In addition the average had risen from $108,420 to $112,427, while the median increased from $40,000 to $45,000. Thirty-two lots sold for a million dollars or more with the sale top of $11,700,000 being the second highest in American yearling sale history. A son of the influential Mr. Prospector sire Kingmambo, it was one of 32 yearlings, 11 of them costing a million or more, purchased by John Ferguson representing Dubai's Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the head of the Godolphin racing empire and owner of the Darley studs including operations in the Hunter Valley and at Seymour in Victoria. The Keeneland September sale series is America's premier yearling market and the world's biggest yearling sale. This year over 5,000 lots were catalogued.

  3rd week Hong Kong statistics

Week three of racing for the new season in Hong Kong and the Australian training contingent remain "in low gear". Caspar Fownes continues to lead in the Trainer’s rankings having recorded 6 wins, 8 second placings, 9 third placings, a fourth placing and 2 fifth placings from 39 starters. David Hall is the best of the Australians in seventeenth position with a winner, a second placing, a third placing, a fourth placing and a fifth placing from his 13 starters.

G Mosse has extended his lead in the Jockey’s rankings having recorded 8 wins, 2 second placings, 5 third placings, 4 fourth placings and a fifth placing from 28 rides. Brett Prebble is in third position with 5 winners, 3 second placings, 3 third placings and 2 fifth placings from his 30 rides. Shane Dye who has just resumed riding has quickly moved to fifteenth position in the rankings recording a winner and two third placings from his 9 rides.

  Shane Dye commands new respect

Royal Delight, a son of Woodlands Stud's very successful Danehill sire Commands, showed up the remarkable ability and courage of champion Australian jockey Shane Dye, when he piloted this four-year-old on Sunday to victory in the Challenge Cup, the feature event at Hong Kong's Sha Tin racecourse. It was the first day back in action for Dye, the rider earlier in his career of 1989 Melbourne Cup winner Tawriffic, since a horrific fall in Hong Kong three months earlier. It was an accident that saw him suffer serious head injuries, which required emergency surgery to relieve pressure caused by bleeding on the brain, and also a collapsed lung, multiple abrasions and aggravation of an old back injury. Few at the time of the accident could have imagined that this little gamecock would be back in the scrummage of race finishes three months later. Earlier in the afternoon third placed twice, Dye got double satisfaction from the victory of Royal Delight as he recommended the gelding to his Hong Kong connections after they flew him to Australia to try him out before buying at a price reputed to be about $1million. Racing in Australia under the name of War of the Worlds and out of the Rick Worthington training complex near Goulburn, NSW, he had been unbeaten in his three starts, all in Sydney and including appearance in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes at Randwick. Those efforts have been followed by four outings to date in Hong Kong for two wins, including Sunday's Challenge Cup, and a third in another feature event. Acquired by Worthington for $135,000 at the Magic Millions yearling sales at the Gold Coast, this horse was bred by the Basil Nolan family at their highly respected Raheen Stud near Warwick in Queensland. The dam, Conquered, had a foal by Dodge, one of the strong team of sires at Raheen, the next year but was not mated that season. She had a dead foal by another of their sires, Danehill Golden Slipper second Shovhog, in 2005 and is now poised to drop one in October by Commands. Conquered is a fashionably bred mare got by the Bletchingly Golden Slipper winner Star Watch from Victory Heights, a close relation by Sir Tristram to Group1 winners Battle Heights, Noble Heights, Mapperley Heights, Royal Heights and Sky Heights.

Tattersalls October 1 is Simply Perfect

The aptly named SIMPLY PERFECT initiated yet another day of Tattersalls October Yearling Sale domination with victory in the Group 1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile, followed shortly afterwards by an awesome display of superiority by 2004 October sale topper GEORGE WASHINGTON in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. SIMPLY PERFECT, trained by Jeremy Noseda and owned by Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor and John Magnier, led home a Tattersalls October 1 one - two in the Group 1 contest beating Highclere Thoroughbreds' BARATHEA filly TREAT, herself an 80,000 guineas purchase at the same sale, by a length and a half. Consigned from Catridge Farm Stud at Part 1 of last year's October Yearling Sale, SIMPLY PERFECT, a daughter of DANEHILL out of the Group 1 placed mare HOTELGENIE DOT COM, was purchased for 220,000 guineas by Demi O'Byrne, and the filly has a ROYAL APPLAUSE half-brother catalogued as lot 199 at the forthcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 (October 3rd - 6th). Little more than an hour later the same Demi O'Byrne/Coolmore combination struck again when GEORGE WASHINGTON returned to his imperious best with an effortless 1 1/4 length win over Irish 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner ARAAFA in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. It was the second Group 1 Tattersalls October Part 1 one - two of the day. GEORGE WASHINGTON was the highest priced European yearling of his generation when sold by Trickledown Stud to Demi O'Byrne for 1,150,000 guineas at Part 1 of the October Yearling Sale in 2004. ARAAFA was sold at the same sale for 150,000 guineas and the two outstanding three-year-old milers of their generation both have half-brothers in Part 1 of the forthcoming October Yearling Sale. Lot 17 is the PIVOTAL half-brother to GEORGE WASHINGTON, coming from Round Hill Stud, while the DANEHILL DANCER half-brother to ARAAFA coming from John Troy is lot 432. Part 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling takes place from October 3rd - 6th and catalogues are available from Tattersalls or any of Tattersalls' overseas representatives.

Indian Ink Brother to Sell at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sales received a timely boost at Ascot on the opening day of the three day festival, following the victories of INDIAN INK in the Watership Down Stud Sales Stakes and ACTS OF GRACE in the Group 3 Princess Royal Stakes. The Richard Hannon trained INDIAN INK ran out a decisive winner of the Watership Down Stud Sales Stakes under the guidance of Richard Hughes for owner Raymond Tooth and confirmed the promise he had shown when second in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York on his previous start. INDIAN INK is a son of INDIAN RIDGE out of the Listed-placed DARSHAAN mare MAID OF KILLEEN and was consigned to Part 1 of the 2005 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Killeen Castle Stud where he was purchased by bloodstock agent Peter Doyle for only 25,000 guineas. Killeen Castle Stud are set to offer an own-brother to INDIAN INK as lot 779 at Part 2 of the forthcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (October 10-14). The victory of ACTS OF GRACE in a Listed race at Chantilly three weeks ago gave a considerable boost to her RED RANSOM half-brother, to be consigned by Voute Sales as lot 413 at Part 1 of the October Yearling Sale (October 3-6), and that was further strengthened when the daughter of BAHRI ran out an emphatic winner of the Group 3 Princess Royal Stakes at Ascot today. The John Dunlop trained filly is out of Prince Faisal's Group 1 Prix de Diane winner RAFHA whose four Group and Listed winning foals include sire of the moment INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. The October Part 1 catalogue recieved another update when Cheveley Park Stud's KING'S BEST filly QUEEN'S BEST ran out an impressive winner of the DJP International Handicap under Ryan Moore. The Sir Michael Stoute trained filly was purchased by Cheveley Park Stud's General Manager Chris Richardson at the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 for 310,000 gns when consigned from Abbeville & Meadow Court Studs. QUEEN'S BEST is out of the IN THE WINGS mare CLOUD CASTLE, winner of the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes and placed in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille and Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks. CLOUD CASTLE, a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winners LUSO and WARRSAN, is already the dam of Listed winning and Group placed REVERIE SOLITAIRE and is represented at Part 1 of the October Yearling Sale by a colt from the first crop of DUBAI DESTINATION, catalogued as lot 54 and consigned from Peter Stanley's New England Stud. Catalogues for Parts 1, 2 and 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales are available from Tattersalls now - www.tattersalls.com.

Shane Dye To Resume Riding at Sha Tin

Wonderful news for fans of jockey Shane Dye who has received a medical clearance from Professor Poon Wai Sang, neurosurgeon, to resume race riding. Dye will resume at the Sha Tin race meeting to be held on Sunday, 24 September 2006.

  2nd week Hong Kong statistics

Week two of racing for the new season in Hong Kong and the Australian training contingent are still "in low gear". Caspar Fownes leads the Trainer’s rankings having recorded 4 wins, 6 second placings, 4 third placings, a fourth placing and 2 fifth placings from 24 starters. David Hall is the best of the Australians in tenth position with a winner, a second placing, a third placing and a fifth placing from his 9 starters.

Things remain close at the top of the Jockey’s rankings at the end of week two with G Mosse holding a slender lead having recorded 5 wins, 3 third placings, a fourth placing and a fifth placing from 13 rides. Brett Prebble is in second position with 4 winners, a third placing and a fifth placing from his 17 rides.

Rejected Victorian visitors have million dollar yearlings

Two stakes winners by leading sons of Mr. Prospector, who did not get the respect they appeared to deserve when they shuttled briefly out to Victoria, had lots among the 32 which sold for a million dollars and more at the select sessions of America's premier yearling sale which got underway at Keeneland, Kentucky on September 11. Now high up among the best sires in America, they are Distorted Humor (Forty Niner - Danzig's Beauty, by Danzig), a sire who now commands a fee in Kentucky of $150,000, and Mr. Greeley (Gone West - Long Legend, by Reviewer), fee $35,000. A leading sprinter who was successful in three stakes and runner up in the American Breeders' Cup Sprint, Mr. Greeley had only 20 potential runners from his one trip out here in1996 but they included ten winners including Miss Kournikova, a filly successful in five races including the Group1 Oakleigh Plate. Distorted Humor had far better opportunity here, looking after books, albeit of modest quality, of 78 and 81 on visits in1999 and 2000. They provided 75 winners, five of them, including SAJC Australasian Oaks winner Rinky Dink, successful in stakes events, from 94 starters. Distorted Humor appeared three times among last week's American million dollar-plus sellers, being the sire of colts which went for $1,050,000 and $1,200,000 and of the dam of another, a Storm Cat colt, which went for $8,200,000. The mother of the latter colt, Awesome Humor, is one of five American Group1 winners by Distorted Humor. Mr. Greeley only had one yearling in the million dollar seller range but it was the fourth highest priced lot at $5,700,000, a brown colt out of England bred German Oaks winner Silvester Lady. Outselling this colt was the sale topper at $11,700,000, a Kingmambo colt from the Seattle Slew Listed winner Crown of Crimson, and then a Danzig colt from an unplaced Deputy Minister at $9,200,000 and the Storm Cat-Awesome Humor colt at $8,200,000. The $11,700,000 was the second highest price in American yearling sales history, surpassed only by the world record $13,100,000 paid by Robert Sangster at the American sales in198 for a Nijinsky colt. Named Seattle Dancer, he ran five times for two Group 2 wins in Ireland, a second in the Group1 Grand Prix de Paris, a maiden third and a sixth in the French Derby. At stud his 272 winners included six successful in Group1 events. The top four sellers at the 2006 American premier sale, one for which over 5,000 yearlings were catalogued, were all knocked down to Ferguson Bloodstock, acting for Dubai's Sheikh Mohammed Maktoum, the head of the Maktoum racing conglomerate Godolphin and owner of the Darley Studs including the complexes at Aberdeen in the Hunter Valley and Seymour in Victoria. The highest priced filly at the sale was a Seeking the Gold product which is the first foal of American triple Group 1 winner Take Charge Lady, a daughter Dehere, the prominent shuttle sire on a fee of $82,500 at Coolmore in the Hunter Valley this year. Another filly with an Australian connection to make big money was one by Storm Cat and from Warrior Queen, a former leading sprinter at three in England and Ireland, which went for $2,200,000. This filly was bred in America for Australian breeder and TBNSW member Jim Fleming, owner of the Tyreel Stud in the Hawkesbury valley and is a sister to one which he sold for $3,900.000 at these sales last year. Former Coolmore visitor Giant's Causeway, a sire who will have yearlings at top Australian sales next year, had representatives sell at $2,600,000 and $1,900,000, while the most successful sire among those available in Australia this season was Fusaichi Pegasus. Another Coolmore sire, this Mr. Prospector Kentucky Derby winner achieved a high at the sale of $1,000,000. The most successful new sire at the sales was Vindication with lots selling at $4,600,000 and $2,800,000.The unbeaten champion American juvenile of 2002, he is by Seattle Slew and from Strawberry Reason, a Group 3 winner by the Australian bred dual hemisphere champion Strawberry Road.

The Tattersalls December Sale is to feature a complete dispersal from Roger BainesBritton House Stud. The dispersal will number 15 lots comprising one yearling, five foals, three fillies in and out of training and six broodmares, and promises to be amongst the highlights of the sale which takes place from November 20th - December 1st. Four of the six broodmares are already dams of Group or Listed winners including the outstanding producer SOLO DE LUNE, whose seven winners to date include the Group 1 winner CERULEAN SKY and the Champion European three-year-old filly L'ANCRESSE, the regally bred Grade 3 winner MACKIE, herself a half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner SEA HERO, whose four winners to date include the Grade 2 winner MR MELLON and three further Stakes performers including this year's Group 3 placed two-year-old DANEBURY HILL. Completing the quartet are the Listed winner KENMIST, dam of 2004 Group 1 Prix du Moulin winner GREY LILAS, and the Listed winning Classic placed KITZA whose two winners to date include the Listed winner FORT DIGNITY. SOLO DE LUNE is in foal to MONTJEU, MACKIE to UNBRIDLEDS SONG, KENMIST to DANEHILL DANCER and KITZA to PIVOTAL. MONTFLEUR, the four-year-old daughter of MACKIE by SADLER'S WELLS, in foal to TIGER HILL, and WOODYOUSMILEFORME, a WOODMAN own-sister to Grade 1 winner CIRO complete the mares, while the three fillies in/out of training comprise CARISOLO, a four-year-old winning DUBAI MILLENNIUM daughter of SOLO DE LUNE and her unraced two-year-old DANEHILL half-sister DANOISE, as well as PASSARELLE, a two-year-old IN THE WINGS daughter of KITZA. The lone yearling is another daughter of SOLO DE LUNE, by first crop sire DALAKHANI, making her a three-parts sister to both CERULEAN SKY and L'ANCRESSE, while the five foals feature a SADLER'S WELLS colt out of SOLO DE LUNE and an ELUSIVE QUALITY colt out of MACKIE, as well as daughters of KENMIST, WOODYOUSMILEFORME and OYSTER CATCHER by PIVOTAL, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR and SELKIRK repectively. Commenting on the dispersal, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said; "Roger Baines has assembled a small but outstanding band of broodmares in recent years and the dispersal from his Britton House Stud will undoubtedly prove to be amongst the highlights of what promises to be a very high quality renewal of the Tattersalls December Sale. Roger is no stranger to success at Tattersalls having sold a DIESIS colt out of KITZA for 1,000,000 guineas at the 2003 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and we look forward to conducting the dispersal on his behalf."

New season bursts to life at Sha Tin

The new Hong Kong racing season began with a bang at Sha Tin on 10 September 2006 as almost 40,000 race fans turned out to welcome back Hong Kong's most popular sport after the summer break. Before racing began those present in the parade ring enjoyed the season-opening ceremony officiated by HKSAR Chief Executive, the Honourable Mr Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Chairman, Mr John C C Chan. As is tradition, the HKSAR Chief Executive officially declared the season underway by striking a ceremonial gong. "We are satisfied with how today's meeting went," the Club's Chief Executive, Mr Lawrence T Wong, commented at the close of the ten-race programme. "The racecourse attendance was up on the figure 12 months ago, and the average betting turnover per race was as good as last year's when there was a HK$25m Triple Trio jackpot on offer. Operations ran very smoothly and we hope this is a positive omen for the season ahead." Winning his first race for almost two years, Town Of Fionn impressively lifted the HKSAR Chief Executive's Cup, the day's feature event, with a matchless finishing burst down the centre of the track. Town Of Fionn's owner Yeung Kwong-fat accepted his trophy from The Hon Mr. Tsang, in whose honour the race is named. The 2004 National Day Cup was the scene of Town Of Fionn's most recent success when, revealingly, he raced from an identical rating of today's 106. Jockey Robbie Fradd jockey was vigorously driving Town Of Fionn along towards the rear as the field straightened for home, but the pair made up about six lengths of the tiring leaders to score drawing clear by one and three-quarter lengths. "I'm best when fresh!" quipped Fradd, returning to the weighing room after his first ride of the season. "They went a little too quick up front and the ground is a fraction quicker out wide as the results have shown today. It's also important that he was back to a competitive rating - but he won it very well, he really lengthened for me," the South African rider added.

(Hong Kong Jockey Club)

** Footnote: Town of Fionn (AUS) (Snippets-Ballyfin) was bred by TBNSW member Mr I Johnson

  1st week Hong Kong statistics

Only one meeting was conducted in the first week of racing for the new season – the mid-week meeting being abandoned due to the weather. The Australian training contingent were off to a slow start, by their standards being in 9th, 10th and 11th placings. Tony Cruz was quick out of the gates and is on the top of the Trainer’s rankings having recorded 3 wins, a second placing, a third placing and a fourth placing from 11 starters. David Hall is in ninth position with a second placing and a third placing from his 3 starters. John Moore is in tenth position with a second placing, a fourth placing and a fifth placing from 9 starters. John Size is in eleventh position with a second placing and a fourth placing from his 7 starters.

It is close at the top of the Jockey’s rankings at the end of week one with K L Chui holding a slender lead having recorded 2 wins and a second placing from 7 rides. Brett Prebble is in second position with 2 winners and a third placing from his 6 rides. Danny Nikolic is in tenth position with a second placing and a third placing from his 5 rides.

Sixties Icon Heads Massive Day for Tattersalls Yearlings

The Jeremy Noseda trained SIXTIES ICON became the fourth 2006 British Classic winner purchased at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales when winning the St Leger by an impressive 2 ½ lengths from fellow Tattersalls yearling purchase THE LAST DROP. By the Coolmore based sire GALILEO, who remarkably sired the first three home, SIXTIES ICON represents a triumph of breeding the best to the best being by a dual Derby winner out of Trevor Harris' homebred Oaks winner LOVE DIVINE. SIXTIES ICON was sold on behalf of Harris by Watership Down Stud at Part 1 of the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale where he was knocked down to agent John Warren for 230,000 guineas. Warren purchased the son of GALILEO for owners Paul and Susan Roy who, alongside trainer Jeremy Noseda, were enjoying their first English Classic success. SIXTIES ICON joins ALEXANDROVA (420,000 guineas), GEORGE WASHINGTON (1,150,000 guineas) and SIR PERCY (16,000 guineas) in a remarkable quartet of British Classic winners purchased at the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, and both SIXTIES ICON and GEORGE WASHINGTON have half brothers, by RED RANSOM and PIVOTAL respectively, for sale in the forthcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1, as does Noseda's other 2006 Tattersalls Classic winner ARAAFA (150,000 guineas) who has a DANEHILL DANCER half brother catalogued. SIXTIES ICON was one of no less than six Group/Listed winning Tattersalls October Yearling purchases on the day with the Michael Bell trained RED EVIE, a 58,000 guineas Kern/Lillingston purchase, continuing her amazing unbeaten run with a hard fought win in the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown, and SIMPLY PERFECT (220,000 guineas) stamping herself as a live 2007 Classic prospect winning the Group 2 May Hill Stakes. SIMPLY PERFECT has a ROYAL APPLAUSE half brother in Part 1 of the October Yearling Sale. Completing the sextet were the Listed winning trio comprising the Sylvester Kirk trained CALDRA, a 14,000 guineas October Part 2 purchase, the Jean Claude Rouget trained EPATHA, a 30,000 guineas October 2 purchase, who has a RED RANSOM half sister in Part 2 of the October Yearling Sale and the Patrick Chamings trained FOXHAVEN, a 40,000 guineas October 1 purchase, who has a SELKIRK half brother in Part 2 of the October Yearling Sale. Catalogues for Parts 1,2 and 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales are available from Tattersalls and all Tattersalls overseas representatives. The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 takes place from October 3rd - 6th, Part 2 from October 10th - 14th and Part 3 from October 27th - 28th.   Final Results from Tattersalls Ireland Yearling Sale

The strong demand for yearlings at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale continued throughout the third and final day, with a top price of €60,000 for a Medecis half-sister to recent Listed 2yo winner, Stevie Gee, and the highest priced colt an Invincible Spirit lot 499 bought by Bobby O’Ryan for €58,000. The total Part Two (Days 2 and 3) average was €16,654, up 49% from last year, while the median of €13,000 also showed an increase of 44%. Earlier in the week, the highest ever price for a yearling at the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale was realised when Lot 66, a colt by High Chaparral out of Whisper Light from The Castlebridge Consignment, was sold for €225,000 to football agent Willie McKay during the New Sires Showcase session of the sale. The entire Premier Session on Day One showed impressive results with an exceptional clearance rate of 90%, with an average of €29,898 for each yearling sold, an improvement of 18% on 2005. Tattersalls Ireland Chairman Edmond Mahony was keen to express his gratitude not only to the many buyers from Ireland, England and overseas but also the consignors, "The success of this week’s sale can be put down many factors, not least the fact that vendors are offering horses at the September Sale that appeal to the purchasers, be they trainers, agents or pinhookers. It is also increasingly evident to everyone that the results of horses bought at this sale in recent years have been outstanding; every day there seems to be another new 2yo winner bought from last year’s sale, ten of which are now stakes winners or placed, as well as the high profile horses such as Rising Cross, Saoire, English Ballet etc, and many buyers here have said that they are specifically targeting next year’s €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Sales Stakes." "It meant a great deal to us that the highest ever priced yearling at Tattersalls Ireland was bought from the New Sires Showcase, and to have eight horses sell for €100,000 or more was especially pleasing. Overall we were delighted with the strength of the demand from buyers at all levels throughout the sale." The full statistics for the sale are as follows:
