  Stakes Double at Leopardstown

Tattersalls Ireland enjoyed great results with their sales graduates on Sunday at Leopardstown when SHE'S OUR MARK won the Group 3 Desmond Stakes, having previously been runner up in the Gr.3 Brownstown Stakes. She is the 11th Stakes winning graduate this year from the September Sale. Pat Flynn had bought She's Our Mark from the September Yearling Sale 2 years ago for a mere €12,000 and it was the same trainer who was responsible for BABY BLUE EYES, winner of the Listed EBF Hurry Harriet Stakes, moved to Leopardstown from the abandoned Gowran meet earlier in the week. BABY BLUE EYES was bought as a foal from Gainsborough Stud's draft at the Tattersalls Ireland December Flat sale for €15,500. Baby Blue Eyes has a 1/2 brother by Key of Luck, lot 574 the 2007 September Yearling Sale under the Castlebridge Consignment. Also at Leopardstown, another September Graduate SATU won the selfcatering.ie Handicap later in the card for trainer David Myerscough. SATU was bought for €80,000 from breeder Denis McDonnell's Parkway Farm. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, 3yo filly VALBENNY, a €16,000 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Graduate was very unlucky not to win the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, and was runner up for the second time, having narrowly missed out on the Grade 1 American Oaks earlier in the season. The daughter of Val Royal has twice won Grade 2s since moving to the US during the winter. Another high-profile September Yearling Graduate bought for €83,000, Jim Bolger's Creachadoir, runner up in both the French and the Irish 2,000 Guineas, was recently bought by Sheikh Mohammed. This year's September Yearling Sale runs from 4th -6th September and will open with the New Sires Showcase, featuring yearlings by first crop stallions.

  2006-7 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings

The 2006-7 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings have been released by the International Federation of Horse Authorities. The rankings cover those horses which either raced in or were trained in countries whose racing season runs from 1 August to 31 July. To merit inclusion, a horse must have been rated at 115 or above in the period under review by the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings Conference. The rankings are headed by Invasor (Arg) at 129 for his win in the 2007 Dubai World Cup at Nad al Sheba racecourse in March. Leading the Australian horses were El Segundo, Miss Andretti, Pompeii Ruler and Takeover Target on 120. The leading 3yo’s were Haradasun, He’s No Pie Eater and Mentality all on 117. Of the 65 horses making the listings 29 were Australian trained. This compares with 16 in 2005/6 and only 9 in 2004/5. A further 6 Australian bred horses trained in Hong Kong and Dubai were also listed as well as Delta Blues (Japan) for his performance in winning the Melbourne Cup and Yeats (Ireland) who ran 7th in the same race. Greg Carpenter who has represented Australia on the WTRR Conference since October 2005 said the listings provided ample proof Australian horses are now receiving the recognition their racetrack performances demanded both within Australia and on the world stage. ‘The Australian Racing Board Chairman, Bob Pearson acknowledged the work done by the ANZ Classifications Committee and in particular its Chairman, Greg Carpenter stating . "The Australian Racing Board has been concerned for some time that Australian horses were not receiving sufficient acknowledgement for their achievements in the International Ratings and the WTRR. The ANZ Classifications Committee , and in particular its Chairman , Greg Carpenter, are to be congratulated on the hard work that has led to this result, in obtaining a better international understanding of the quality of the Australian horses that were assessed at the World Thoroughbred Rankings Conference ."

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Catalogue Now Online

The catalogue for Book 1 of the 2007 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, sponsored by Betfair, can now be viewed online at www.tattersalls.com. Numbering 733 lots (81 more than in 2006), the catalogue for Europe's premier yearling sale features the only qualifiers for the £2,200,000 Tattersalls Timeform Millions, the world's most valuable sales race series. The four day sale will take place from Tuesday 9th - Friday 12th October at Tattersalls Park Paddocks in Newmarket. Having produced three consecutive Derby winners, AUTHORIZED (400,000 guineas), SIR PERCY (16,000 guineas) and MOTIVATOR (75,000 guineas), the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale is unrivalled as a source of Classic winners and the candidates for the £2,200,000 Tattersalls Timeform Millions include own or half - brothers and sisters to no less than 55 Classic and Group 1 winners. In addition all of the current top 20 British and Irish active sires including CAPE CROSS, DANEHILL DANCER, DANSILI, DR FONG, GALILEO, GREEN DESERT, MONTJEU, PIVOTAL, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, SELKIRK and SADLER'S WELLS are well represented. Amongst the Classic and Group 1 winners with own or half siblings catalogued are ALBORADA, ATTRACTION, COCKNEY REBEL, DIVINE PROPORTIONS, DR FONG, DUTCH ART, EXCELLENT ART, FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND, GREY SWALLOW, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, LAWMAN, LOVE DIVINE, MOUNT NELSON, PEARLY SHELLS, SAGAMIX, SAOIRE, SEQUOYAH, SIMPLY PERFECT, SIXTIES ICON and SPECIOSA. While unchallenged as a source of European Classic winners, including four out of five 2006 British Classic winners, the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale is also a prolific source of top class two year olds and Book 1 includes yearlings by 18 of the current top 20 British and Irish based sires of two year olds including ACCLAMATION, BAHAMIAN BOUNTY, HAWK WING, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, KYLLACHY, OASIS DREAM, and ROYAL APPLAUSE. Successful 2007 first crop two year olds sires also feature prominently including CAPTAIN RIO, CLODOVIL, DALAKHANI, DOMEDRIVER, DUBAI DESTINATION, FALBRAV, HIGH CHAPARRAL, NAYEF and STATUE OF LIBERTY, while Classic and Group 1 winners with their first crop of yearlings include BACHELOR DUKE, EXCEED AND EXCEL, HAAFHD, INDIAN HAVEN, REFUSE TO BEND, and STORMING HOME. The overseas based stallions with yearlings catalogued make equally impressive reading and amongst them are the proven Classic and Group 1 producers ANABAA, ARCH, COZZENE, DIESIS, DYNAFORMER, EL PRADO, ELUSIVE QUALITY, FORESTRY, FUSAICHI PEGASUS, GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, GONE WEST, JOHANNESBURG, LEMON DROP KID, LINAMIX, MONSUN, MR GREELEY, RAHY and STREET CRY. Commenting on the Tattersalls October Book 1 catalogue, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said; "2007 has already been an exciting year for Tattersalls with the launch of the £2,200,000 Tattersalls Timeform Millions and the recent announcement of Betfair's innovative sponsorship of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The standard of the 2007 Tattersalls October Book 1 catalogue very much continues in the same vein with all the ingredients we were looking for when we launched the Tattersalls Timeform Millions. We have a catalogue which combines the sort of yearlings that have made this sale the preeminent source of European Classic winners with the perfect types for the Tattersalls Timeform Million and the Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800. Crucially the less precocious yearlings also have a fantastic opportunity with the Tattersalls Timeform £400,000 3YO Trophy to aim for in 2009. Book 1 of the 2007 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale genuinely has something for owners and trainers with differing requirements and budgets, and every single one of them will have the chance to win massive prize money.

2007/08 Sees Huge Increases in Stakes

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing celebrated the start of the 2007/08 season with an overall forecast funding increase of $5.7 million, up 9.2% from the previous season. There is an increase in base stakes for all regions, the level of direct meeting funding for each region broadly matching the turnover generated by that region. ‘Free Racing' for all standard races will be maintained. This was successfully launched in February this year. In addition, NZTR has initiated the process of picking up specific raceday services costs on behalf of clubs and this is projected to reduce clubs' raceday expenses by over $1 million in the coming season. NZTR is also providing a significant underwrite for clubs in terms of their off-course generated income, providing certainty of club funding levels. Other key NZTR funding initiatives are:

  • The payment of rider's fees for connections of horses that do not earn stakes in Maiden races (in place of starter incentive payments) at an estimated cost of $770,000.

  • Approximately $300,00 in funding available for payment to clubs towards the operating costs of identified strategic training venues throughout the country.

  • The expansion of the subsidy available for small club feature races from $4,000 to $6,000

  • The inclusion of a rider's engagement fee supporting riders who are engaged by connections but then are left without a ride when the horse is scratched .

Minimum prizemoney offered on Premier meetings in the last two years has grown from $10,000 to $20,000 and minimum levels for Group and Listed races have been lifted substantially for the new season, including Group One races to a regionally competitive $200,000. The first clubs to announce increases were the Canterbury Jockey Club (CJC) and the Counties Racing Club (CRC). The CJC's New Zealand Cup Week in November will offer a record $2.1 million including $325,000 for the New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas on 10 November 2007 and $325,000 for The First Sovereign Trust New Zealand 2000 Guineas on 17 November 2007. The Club has also raised stakes for their two major Group 2 events with the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup now $220,000 on 17 November 2007 and the Coupland's Bakeries Mile up to $270,000 on Wednesday 14 November 2007. The Club is now also paying stakes from 6th through to 10th in all Group and Listed races. The Counties Racing Club has announced that the Group 2 Eagle Technology Counties Cup will be run for $200,000 in 2007. The Club has also confirmed substantial increases in prize money for the 2007/08 season, to $1,627,500, up 62% from 2003/04 which was the last full year of racing at the Pukekohe Park venue.

September Yearling Sale Catalogue Now Available

704 lots have been catalogued for this year’s September Yearling Sale, due to take place on 4-6 September. The opening session of the sale will again be the highly anticipated NEW SIRES SHOWCASE, (lots 1-63). It was this session last year that produced the record €225,000 High Chaparral colt and the quality of the applicants for the 2007 renewal was understandably very high. There are 22 stallions with first European crop yearlings represented in this session which includes a sensational line up of 2,000 Guineas winners: REFUSE TO BEND, ONE COOL CAT, INDIAN HAVEN, BACHELOR DUKE, SAFFRON WALDEN, AMERICAN POST and HAAFHD. Alongside these are yearlings by sprinters such as KHELEYF, EXCEED AND EXCEL and NEEDWOOD BLADE, as well highly rated 2yos ELUSIVE CITY, TOUT SEUL, LUCKY STORY and PYRUS. Shrewd purchasers have found the September Sale a gold mine of talent for a reasonable outlay as the 103 2yo winners in 2006 and the consistent black type level performances attest to. Already in 2007 to date there are 10 black type winning September Sale graduates and amongst the current crop of 3yos we have seen the likes of VALBENNY, a Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 runner up in the US, who was bought for €16,000, Kevin Prendergast’s Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up DIMENTICATA, bought for €50,000, and of course dual 2,000 Guineas runner up this year, Jim Bolger’s CREACHADOIR (€83,000). In previous seasons high profile graduates have included €20,000 purchase RISING CROSS, a dual Oaks runner up and Gr.2 winner, SAOIRE a €65,000 purchase and winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas, SILVER CUP, bought for only €5,000 and a 3-time Gr.2 winner in the US in 2006 and winner of the Italian 1,000 Guineas. Among the many pedigrees of note should be lot 1, a Elusive City ½ brother to Hong Kong Champion HOUSEMASTER, lot 15 a Bachelor Duke filly out of a half sister to Listed winner PHARMACIST, herself the dam of 3 black type horses including Breeders’ Cup Turf winner RED ROCKS, lot 34 a Bachelor Duke filly out of a ½ sister to PRIORY BELLE, Group 1 winner at 2; lot 37, by One Cool Cat out of the black type TABDEA, dam of TOLPUDDLE multiple Listed winner and Gr.3 placed, Lot 67, a ½ sister to Gr.1 winner in the US, ASHKAL WAY, by Royal Applause; lot 217 a Rock of Gibraltar filly out of ZAVALETA, a ½ sister to SHOLOKHOV and the dam of four stakes horses including DANELISSIMA; lot 225, an Invincible Spirit colt out of a full sister to the dam of VALBENNY, herself a September Sales graduate who has two Grade 2 wins and a Grade 1 placing in the US already to her credit, lot 283, a Barathea colt out of a ½ sister to Group 1 fillies CHIC and ECHELON. To give an idea of the quality of pedigree available, it is worth noting that there are many yearlings from stallion-producing families, and amongst them are close relations to CHIEF’S CROWN, AD VALOREM, MUJTAHID, TRADE FAIR, MASTERFUL, SHIROCCO, GRANDERA, ALAMSHAR, STORMING HOME, SWORD DANCE, RAKTI, PETIONVILLE, SIR PERCY, CARNEGIE, and KHELEYF. The sale starts at 10 am on Tuesday 4th September and 10.30 am on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th September. Catalogues are available online at www.tattersalls.ie or by contacting the Tattersalls Ireland office.

Tattersalls and Betfair - Europe's largest Bloodstock Auctioneers and the world's leading betting exchange join forces for Tattersalls Millions

Tattersalls, Europe's largest Bloodstock Auctioneers, have announced that it has agreed a sponsorship deal with Betfair, the world's leading betting exchange, for the Tattersalls Millions race series. The sponsorship will form two parts. Betfair will sponsor the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and Timeform, Betfair's wholly owned subsidiary, will sponsor the three new races worth £2.2 million to be staged at Newmarket Racecourses in 2008 / 2009. Tattersalls Chairman, Edmond Mahony commented: "We are delighted to be partnering with two such high quality brands as Betfair and Timeform. Betfair is a dynamic and fast-growing business, whilst Timeform has a heritage of market leadership and excellence. They are both an ideal fit for Tattersalls. We believe that this is one of the most innovative sale-race series ever and the partnership with Betfair and Timeform endorses the excitement and quality around it." Stephen Burn, Director of Racing at Betfair, added: "This is the first time a deal of this nature has been signed and we look forward to working closely with Tattersalls in an association that takes the traditional bookmaker race-sponsorship strategy to a new level. This unique partnership allows us to elevate the relationship beyond simply the naming of races, and we believe that our association with one of British racing's most respected brands will have international appeal to a select clientele. Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: "We are looking forward enormously to hosting the three races comprising the £2,200,000 Tattersalls Millions and the addition of the 'Timeform' brand to the races brings a new dimension which we warmly welcome. Like Tattersalls, Timeform is a company respected throughout the world and the Tattersalls Timeform Millions are an exciting prospect for all concerned." The three brand new races - The Tattersalls Timeform Millions - will be the most valuable sales-race series in the world. They are to be staged at Newmarket starting in 2008 / 2009, carrying a combined minimum total prize fund of £2.2 million. Entry will be restricted to graduates of the 2007 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (Book One) which will have approximately 750 yearlings catalogued. Top billing goes to a £1 million race for two-year-old colts, geldings and fillies over seven furlongs, closely followed by an £800,000 race for two-year-old fillies only, also over seven furlongs. Both will be run for the first time at the Cambridgeshire Meeting in October of next year, each with a maximum field of 30 horses. The £1 million race will be named the 'Tattersalls Timeform Million' and the fillies' race the 'Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800'. The third race will be the first sales-race ever run in Britain for three-year-olds. Worth £400,000 and run over 10 furlongs, the 'Tattersalls Timeform £400,000 3YO Trophy' will be staged for the first time at Newmarket in 2009 and will be the richest three-year-old race in Britain outside the Classics. Any horse left in the two-year-old races after the first forfeit will be automatically eligible to run in the three-year-old race the following year at no additional cost.
