The Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association was formed in New South Wales in
1921 to represent thoroughbred breeders in Australia.
The national organisation
was formed in 1949 and today each State and the Northern Territory has
its own Association. The NSW Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association Ltd became incorporated in
1987 and currently has over 700 members.
It is funded through membership
dues and a voluntary half percent yearling sale levy. The Board, consisting
of nine members, meets regularly to discuss matters relating to the thoroughbred
industry.
Every member of each state Association
automatically becomes a member of the federal Association, now known as Thoroughbred Breeders Australia.
The federal Association represents
its members at the national and international level on matters such as
quarantine regulations, animal health and welfare, approaches to the Australian
Racing Board (formerly known as the Conference of Principal Clubs) and
promotion of the Australian thoroughbred overseas.
In November 1998 the Association
changed its name to Thoroughbred Breeders N.S.W. Ltd.
