Champion 4YO entire, Our Giant (AUS) (Giant’s Causeway / Macrosa (NZ)) was honoured twice at the recent Highveld Racing Awards in South Africa. Bred by TBNSW member Dean Fleming , Our Giant was not only named Older Colt Of The Year he also took home the honours for Middle Distance Horse Of The Year. 

A $480,000 yearling at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale Our Giant now has 8 wins (including his recent victory in the Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes (1600m) and 9 placings. 

New Zealand based John and Karin Webber (also TBNSW members ) are fortunate enough to own his dam, the twice Listed Macrosa (NZ) ( McGinty (NZ) / Dusky Rosa) who has produced four winners from her five foals to date.

The Champion Two Year Old Filly award went to Merlene De Lago (AUS) (Encosta de Lago / Merlene), bred by TBNSW member Strawberry Hills Stud . Out of the Golden Slipper winning mare, Merlene the beautifully bred filly was purchased by Charles Laird for $775,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Fully deserving of the award, Merlene de Lago has stepped up through the ranks faultlessly with three wins from as many starts. 

Commencing her career with a resounding four length victory in the Listed Ruffian Stakes over 1000m in March, moving on to take out the Gr3 Pretty Polly Stakes by almost the same margin the filly most recently tasted victory in the Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein.

The Highveld Racing Awards are decided by a points based system as well as a panel including the chief handicapper and leading racing journalists.
