Stallion of the Month: Supido

Supido continues to strengthen his reputation as a reliable source of juvenile speed, with his unbeaten son Unit Five delivering a remarkable performance on January’s Magic Millions Race Day.

Standing at Widden Stud, Supido sired the colt who became the first two-year-old to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at just his second career start, adding another significant chapter to Widden’s outstanding record in Magic Millions incentive races.

An $80,000 purchase from the Widden Stud draft at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Unit Five is raced by a large ownership group that proudly includes members of the Widden team. He was bred by Widden staff, including Yearling Manager Liam Attwood, with several electing to retain a share.

The colt was named in honour of much-loved industry figure David Merrick, Widden’s long-time Farm Manager, who passed away early last year. ‘Unit Five’ was David’s on-farm radio call sign.

Unit Five represents the third stakes winner for Supido, joining Buenos Noches and What You Need, with additional winners including Shohisha, Fine Vintage, Super Duck and Kosta’s Crown further underpinning his consistency.

A Group-winning, Group 1-performed sprinter, Supido was the fastest son of Sebring, recording the quickest 1000m and 1200m times of the 2015/16 season. His pedigree traces to an elite sire line featuring Machiavellian, Halo, Northern Dancer and Danehill.

Supido covered 42 mares last spring at a fee of $9,900, and his current crop of two-year-olds is his largest to date. He currently has a 64.7% winners to runners ratio and over $12 million in earnings. With two yearlings just offered at Magic Millions and a further four catalogued for the upcoming Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, momentum continues to build for the Widden stallion as his progeny numbers increase on the track.
